Several major changes have
been made in the Social Security
law regarding children. Two
important changes
are ex
plained briefly below.
1. A child dependent upon a
grandparent can now be eligible
for benefits on that grand
parent's social security if the
child’s natural or adoptive pa
rents are deceased or disabled.
The child must have been liv
ing with and receiving at least
1/2 support from the grand
parent in the year before the
grandparent became entitled to
benefit payments.

Bank Debits Up
In October
In case of death of a grand
parent the same dependency re
quirements must be met except
that the limitation on parents
is changed and the surviving
grandparent must adopt the
child.
2. A child that is adopted by
a worker eligible for retire
ment or disability benefits and
who was living with and depen
dent upon the worker for 12
months before entitlement to
social security can be eligible
for child’s benefits. Any quali
fied child who's adoption occur
red after 1967 may qualify re
troactive to date of adoption.
The law provides that the appli
cations must be filed by the end
of April 1973. Anyone falling
in this category should con
tact a social security office
before the end of April 1973.
After April 1973 benefits can
not be paid for months before
October 1972.
Because the laws are com
plicated and quite restrictive it
is important that all possible
cases be brought to the atten
tion of the Social Security Ad
ministration immediately.
Should you know a child who
might qualify for this type of
benefit have them get in touch
with the social security office
