An Easter Message
Some few months ago we wrapped up our holiday ornaments
and displays, and put them in dead storage for another year.
At the same time we placed our still green holiday tree on
top of the trash pile. In retrospect it almost seems that our
actions were sowing the wind that created the whirlwind.
The intervening days have been dark and gloomy; the wind has
blown - and blown hard - from all points of the compass; the
rains have come, and the snow, and the ice, and the sleet; and
the earth has been a dark and deadly place to live.
But in these last few days, or weeks, the sun has come
to shine once again; the earth is warm and receptive to the
touch of the farm equipment; the planting has begun; and the
fields reflect a rebirth of the life without which our life is in
vain.
,
There is beauty coming to life all around us, and mens
hearts are glad.
Here is new life and the promise of the
harvest of the tomorrow; here is the joy of a rebirth of the
cycle without which men’s sustenance is indeed meager.
We survey all this from our world of happiness, and it
seems that there can be no mar or defect to obscure this
wonderful Springtime, which has ever gladdened the hearts
of men.
But as our eyes scan the entire horizon which is
ours, suddenly there comes into our perspective that trash
pile on which we placed that green holiday tree but some few
months ago.
The tree is still there but it has changed. It
is no longer green and it has lost all its needles, leaving it
brown and bare and ugly. As we continue to gaze off into the
distance at this tree it seems as though it has lost not only
its green needles but most of its branches. Out of the mist
of the distance comes the picture of this tree with but two
branches left - and these are in the shape of a cross. We
continue to gaze and - it can’t be true - but yet there is the
shape of a man hung from those remaining branches of our
dead tree.
So, regardless of all the new life and growth around us, we
are, it seems, in the midst of the death from which we have
just arisen.
All the happiness, joy, and beauty which has been ours is
suddenly tempered by this view of ugliness and death. We
can’t tear our eyes from this tragic sight! There is mourning
in our hearts for this man and all mankind which has caused
this agony and suffering, the unspeakable ingnominy of the
cross.
We continue to gaze into this tragic distance, and then,
suddenly, there is a change!
The cross is still there but
its arms are now empty. Our eyes search and search in vain
for this man who was hung on this cross, but He is no longer
there.
And because He is no longer there, we are free from
the stigma of the death of that tree and cross, and he who hung
on it. Once again the new birth and growth bring nothing but
joy to our lives and the lives of those about us. Yet there re
mains in our hearts the knowledge that all this wonderful
reborn emotion which is now ours, can only be because that
Man came down from the cross.
Who can that Man be? Who could stir within us and all
mankind over the ages this tearing of the mind and heart?
Certainly no ordinary man could do this.
We travel along the restless road of life, and then we meet
a stranger.
Usually this meeting is when our lives are in
precarious balance, and we know not which way to turn. This
stranger holds out His hands to us in love and affection, in
forgiveness for all our errors against Him and all mankind,
and in promise of life eternal. We look again and - no - this
Man is not a complete stranger. The view is a little clouded
but soon it becomes clear that this is the Man who hung from
the cross. Who is this Man? Who could open our hearts and
minds to all the loveliness of nature, the true brotherhood of
all man? Who could bring this rebirth within us? Who could
offer us forgiveness and the love which passes all under
standing?
Truly this IS the Son of God! And because He
lives, we too shall live!
