FOR CHRISTMAS
I want a mind unafraid to
travel, though the trail is not
blazed, and a heart willing to
trust, even when faith seems
the most unreasonable of all
efforts.
FOR CHRISTMAS
I want a sense of humor and
the genius to laugh, the grace
to forgive and the humility to
be forgiven, the willingness to
praise, and the freedom to enjoy
a little leisure with tantalizing
dreams.
TOYS, DOUS BRING AGELESS DEUGHT
FOR CHRISTMAS

Harenholta, Princeton, N.J.
After founding their own toy
firm in 1950, the Barenholtzes
developed an interest in old as
well as new toys. Their tin
toy collection began in 1956,
with a milk wavon painted blue--
a gift to Mrs. Barenholta.

Wheels Have
l^isting Appeal
IN EVERY AGE, wheel toys
capture children’s hearts.
Today’s youngsters thrill to
Christmas gifts of miniature,
motorized racing cars. More
than a century ago, the wheels
might have adorned a diminutive
“horse-drawn" buggy of tin.
But the thought is always the
same: to please a child.
AMONG THE FIRST to make
playthings in quantity for
American children were the tin-
toy manufacturers of the 1850’s
says Mary Childs Black, direc
tor of the Museum of American
Folk Art. Often, the tin toys
were wheel toys, with delicate,
open-spoked wheels repeated in
a wide variety of vehicles and
styles.

Since ancient times, the doll
has played a dual role, as toy
and as religious symbol. To
day’s creche dolls, displayed as
part of the manger scene in
churches and homes, have his
torical counterparts in the dolls
used as religious figures, or
idols, by primitive peoples.
Dolls fashioned of clay, stone
or bone have been unearthed
by archaeologists from tombs
thousands of years old. Their
presence in the tombs is thought
to mean that the dolls were
intended as idols.
The word, "doll," in fact
derives from a Greek word,
“eidolon,” which means
"idol.”
Historians say that, before
the birth of Christ, Egyptian
sun worshippers ldolizeda doll-
like figure, or child, at the sea
son of the year now celebrated
as Christmas. The doll was
meant to symbolize the coming
"rebirth” of the sun in the
spring.
Harks of .-irt
The elaborate European dolls
of the 17th and 18th cneturies
were the precious possessions
of the very rich, Often, they
were court dolls prised by
royalty.
In times of war
able dolls were treated like
works of art--as indeed they
were. Special arrangements
were made to transport them
to safety and a peaceful refuge
for the duration of the war.

Fashion —Invention
Since earliest times, dolls
have followed fashion, and toys
have copied man’s Inventions.
In some cases, toys may even
be said to have sparked inven
tions--witness the velocipede,
a favorite toy a century ago.
Inspired by foot-powered hobby
horses of the early 1800s, the
velocipede in its turn became
the forerunner of the bicycle.
Toys today reflect modern
living--and so did toys of long
ago, in their day. For instance,
toy racing cars came onto the
gift market early in this cen
tury, when the automobile
industry was getting its start.

During the past century, the
doll has really come into its
own, as a precious plaything
for every little girl. Now the
wonders of the doll world, once
the province of kings, are at
the disposal of “little mothers”
in homes across the nation.
From waking, talking, well-

delight little girls. For,
yesterday or today, one thing
is certain. In every generation,
packages from Santa evoke the
same sparkle in young eyes,
for a child’s delight in a dream
come true never changes.
