A HUNTER'S FABLE
“Because I am perfectly aware that you are not a
hunter, I will not waste time asking you whether you
have gotten your buck,” Bill Mayden advised John Bul
lock one day early this week as they enjoyed a coffee
at the Polar Bear. “Likewise,” he added, “you needn’t
ask me how I fared, because you know I don’t hunt,
either.”
“This is indeed true,” John came back, adding, “I
have asked just such a question of any number of my
friends, however, and in many cases . . . most, in fact . . .
I have been advised to tend to my own business, which
translates to ‘no, blast it, 1 didn’t get a buck.’ Lots of
people are touchy that way.”
“Touchy is right,” Bill agreed, “but I can’t say as I
blame them too much. Fellow makes elaborate plans for
a hunting foray, gets up at some unearthly hour, blun
ders around through the woods for heaven knows how
long, stumbles back into civilization carrying nothing
but a rifle that weighs just under a ton. Pretty dis
heartening.”
“You know,” John replied, “I have a friend who says
that his theory is that tne hunter doesn’t find the deer.
The deer finds the hunter. For him the system has
worked out pretty well over the years. He picks a spot
that seems likely to him to be where a deer might come.
He waits. Pretty soon the deer shows up and he shoots
it. Doesn’t work for everybody, I guess, but it works
for him.”
The moral: Going out and shooting a deer isn’t what
you’d call a lead-pipe cinch. It IS possible to come back
empty handed. However, there is a ray of sunshine here.
You don't have to be much of a hunter to find “rich
man’s food at poor man’s prices.” It’s just where it’s al
ways been for lo! these many years. And it gets better
year by year!
