Sen ate needing to clear much pend ing legislation, Senator Wayne Morse’s filibuster would be ra ther comical. He, with Oregon’s other senator, Maurine Neuberger are two of a few who are filibust ering to keep a bill from the floor that would let private companies develop a communications system by using satellites like Telestar. The president favors the bill, practically all the Republicans favor it and approximately three-fourths of the Democrats are for it. But the handful keep it from being voted on by con tinuous speech-making. This is the same Senator Morse, who a very short time ago, was | violently opposed to this idea when southerners used the same tactics to keep civil rights legis- lation from coming to the floor. And it is the same Wayne Morse who holds the all-time record for filibustering — when in 1953 he talked for 22 hours and 26 min- | utes. Like a good lawyer, he can make a case for either side and does not mind switching any more than he minds changing political parties. • • • • According to Newsweek (Aug. 6,1962) a movement is under way to eliminate funerals as we know them today. Reasons given are the high costs that work hard ships on many families and church leaders condemning it as “neo-pagan corpse worship.” • • • • The four states which have nei ther sales nor income taxes are Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey and Texas. Nearly 40 percent of Nevada’s revenue derives from the Las Vegas gambling casinos. • • • • Last year there were 15,000 accidents on golf courses. But at that it was safer than around the house falling off ladders, falling in the bath tub or sticking a foot in the power mower! • • • • "There's nothing wrong with our national economy—it's our national extravagance." —Louis Nelson Bowman. • • • • “Someone has figured out that we have put 35 million laws on the books trying to enforce the 10 commandments.” —B. Had the Pilgrims placed a high value on old - age pensions and unemployment insurance, there would have been no landing at Plymouth Rock. The fellow who is doing nothing is doing somebody. GIRLS' Heavy Weight — Regular 49c BOYS' Last week’s Emmett (Idaho) Messenger-Index carried an ac count of all service stations in Gem county discontinuing giving trading stamps, effective Aug. 1. Most retail establishments that give stamps felt they were forced to do so because their competitor started the practice—and for the same reason, feel that they are unable to quit. So far as we know, this is the first instance of business men in the U. S. volun tarily getting together and elim inating the practice. (They may be prosecuted for violation of the anti-trust law, or collusion, by the federal government, but we sin cerely admire them.) If more of our citie« would dare break the practice of ac cepting federal funds for all their needs it would be helpful, too. But it is like cheating, where grading is done on the curve—one feels he must do as others, for self-protection. • • • • Today it costs the people of the U. S. 90 times as much to govern twice as many people as it did ‘ 50 years ago. In 1913 when the 16th amendment was passed, giv ing the government the right to tax the citizens, the innocent ap pearing 3 percent on a few rich people has risen to a high of 91 percent on them and the poorer ones 20 percent.
