A ccentuate the Positive
Nyssa is sitting in an enviable position during the
c u rre n t brief period of ‘‘recession” being so thoroughly
publicized throughout the nation.
No one can deny th ere is a squeeze on th e n ation’s
economy and th at it* is being felt throughout th e country.
It can and should be denied th a t th e nation is in the
throes of a depression.
To adm it a general buyers’ resistance is common sense
and for a com m unity like this to accept it as a challenge
is good business.
For instance, savings accounts at th e Nyssa bank
reached m ore than $5,000,000.00 the first of th e y e ar —
the highest in the history of Nyssa. This reveals two
things: the general public in this com m unity is not
“broke” and individuals are being m ore cautious about
spending.
Here is w here the economy of Nyssa as a w hole can
be strengthened. E veryday needs m ust be purchased
and it is probable th a t all of them are available in Nyssa
at prices as low o r low er th a n they can be obtained
elsewhere.
One m erchant com m ented on th e economy by citing
his contention th at autom obiles are still being purchased
and that during a period like the present, buyers are
m ore apt to select less expensive cars from th e ir local
dealers than they are to tre k to P o rtlan d or San F ra n
cisco and buy Cadillacs. He also speculated on the possi
bility that there could well be less buying of $1000 fu r
coats, not available here, but m ore $50 purchases of
lingerie and other item s as gifts for th e hom em aker.
Automobile travel during a “slow -up” period is prob
ably restricted, but gasoline, oil and repairs are necessary
when rural residents and tow nspeople “drive to the
store” to buy those everyday needs.
Every individual can rem inisce about his successes
and set-backs and w ithout doubt recall his most rapid
strides w ere made during those tim es w hen he had a
challenge to m eet or an obstacle to overcome. America
was built on such a prem ise — th a t of a constant chal
lenge and new frontiers to conquer. This nation gained
more in medical and scientific know ledge during W orld
W ar II, w hich was a challenge, than it had in any other
like period in history, then suffered a set-back w hen the
w ar ended and there was no challenge to meet. A chal
lenge has been presented by the Soviet S putnik and it
will be met.
So it is w ith sm all com m unities like the Nyssa area
and the individuals w ho live here.
