Oregon's "Soak the Rich" Plan
Saturates the General Public
O regon’s “soak the rich” income tax policy was
proved a fallacy this week w hen new state income tax
deduction tables w ere distributed to employers.
Gobbledy-gook flowing from the m ouths of politicians
during the last session of the Oregon legislature would
have had us believe w age-earners would be saved from
excessive taxation by repeal of the surtax, by providing
more state funds for schools and by the ever-present de
sire to make life beautiful for “the common m an.”
The results of the politicians’ efforts are coming to
light!
G ate City Journal personnel are an excellent exam ple
of w age-earners in Oregon insofar as variations in sal
a r ie s , differences in beneficiaries and property ow ner
ships are concerned.
Five full-tim e w age-earners w ill pay the S tate of
Oregon approxim ately 75 percent m ore income taxes
under the new law than they did on the old schedule in
cluding the often condemned surtax and ex tra paym ents
at the end of the year. Largest increase was for a single
person whose new “contribution will be m ore than
double his form er state tax. A nother employee w ith four
dependents will pay 20 percent m ore th an he did under
the old incom e-surtax formula.
One employee, who owns his own home, w ill save
about $9 property tax as the result of the Nyssa school
district’s “gift” of some $42,000 from the state, bu t in
turn must pay about $25 more in state income taxes.
It seems that the only w ay to get tax relief in Oregon
is to have seven children, deed your property to a non
resident cousin, go on relief and tu rn down all offers
for em ploym ent or business ow nership.
