You Can't Have Your Cake— Or Eat It!
Next Monday :s a birthday for which nobody will
bake any cakes.
On February 25, fourty-four years ago, the federal
government was authorized the power to levy an in
come tax on individuals. It was felt at the time that rates
could never reach 10'. .
The first year of the tax total corporate and individ
ual income levies brought the government $80 million
Dividing this by the population of 1913 shows that the
per capita tax bite was 82 cents.
By contrast, in 1956— two world wars and a police
action later —the income tax brought the federal govern
ment $55 billion This is a per capita tax bite of $328.
Per capita annual income was $358 in 1913; today it
is about $1,647 In th.s 44-year period, per capita income
increased 4 ’ 2 times while the per capita tax payments
increased an even 400 times
Other comparisons of then and now are of equal in
terest. For instance, in 1913 the single personal exemp
tion was $3,000 compared to $600 today.
In 1913. a single man with a $5,000 a year income
paid $20 tax; today, he pays $944 Rates the first year
were 1 to 6'- ; they range today from 20 to 91r<'.
Mr. Taxpayers total tax bill in 1913 was distributed
70.5' > for state and local governments and 29.5 for the
federal government. Today, the federal government
takes 72.3 , leaving 27.7' for state and local units.
In 1913, people did locally what they wanted done
Today, they give their money to the federal government
and fight among themselves to see who can get the most
back.
Our thanks (?) to Doug Piggott. Portland, for making
us feel even more miserable.

How is your Vocabulary?
We were all happy to see
Vaugh Str.r.ger back on the Mam
street of Nyssa last week even
though he was still pretty well
plastered!
For you who take this paper
out of the trade area it is only
fa r to mention that Vaughn fell
off of a haystack broke both
wrists and injured his back
Most of us tend to get into the
rut of using cliches, expressions
which have become monotonous
through many repetitions. Thus
we ' Point with Pride', are “sca

too badly across the back fence
or among close friends and rela

tablished it becomes difficult to
clean up the vocabulary when
speaking on more formal occas
ions.
But the person to be really
pitied is the one who has too
frequently depended upon pro
fane ar.d vulgar expletives for
emphasis or to prove that he is
“ one of the boys" He is to be
pitied because:
1 His poverty of words brings
embarrassment on many situa
tions.
2 The errpha.-is he desires is
lost through stupid repetition
Shocking words become like the

Speaking of politics, I think it

Bill Hipp thought I wasn't

It happened this a-way. When
I lost my wallet last week I
passed it off with saying "who
steals my purse steals trash!"
Bill asked me what was the
rest of the quotation. I didn't
know but said I'd find out. he
didn't believe me and WHAT I
found out might be a sermon
for me and you, kind reader.
To answer that question I sub
mit Ihe following:
Othello, act 3. scene 3:
"Who steals my purse steals
trash; 'tis something, nothing;
iwas mine, ‘tis his. and has been
a slave to thousands; but he
that filches from pie my good
name robs me of that that not
enriches him. and makes me
poor indeed."

me!

Let the Bible Speak
Dear friends, this article is
not written to hurt anyores
feelings.
We are all trying to get to
heaven, the place where Jesus
went to prepare for us. John
14: 2. 3.
We cannot get there except
through Chr.st John 14 6.
He told the apostles they
knew the way to get there
(John 14:4) and He command
ed them to teach us everything
they knew. Matt. 28:19. 20.
Let us notice some gospel
that is or was another gospel.
NOT FREE BUT BOTH FOR ONLY
Jesus or the angels in heaven
don't know the day or hour,
only the Father knows. Mall.
