Arm istice day, which m arks the end of a con flict th at was superficially expected to conclude the w ar to end wars in 1918, was passed by this week with com paratively little observance because the signing of the arm istice with a defeated G erm any 33 years ago failed to m easure up to expectations. The many thousands of men who gave their lives in th e conflict and those who are still paying the price of w ar with pain-wracked bodies fought as valiantly as the men of any of the wars th at have scourged the earth , but our political leaders and the people as a whole failed m iserably to m aintain the peace for which th fy thought were fighting. T heir devotion, their heroism and the justice for which they fought m erit the continued recognition of th eir sacrifices by a people who have been saved from slavery and degradation many times by the'young m an hood of this country. Interest in observance of Arm istice day slumps to a new low each year because people say "W e have had so m any wars Armistice day doesn’t mean anything any more; it didn’t accomplish anything.” Despite our indifference to a day th at "doesn’t mean anything any more,” the spirit of these men should be hallowed in the archives of our fondest mem ories They lived, they fought and they died as the soldiers of the American revolution, the Civil war, the Spunish-American war and the second world war. Am ericans are practical people as well as idealists and we cannot expect them to do im practical things even in the observance of holidays. The victory over B ritain in 1776 led to the establishm ent of this nation, so it will always be observed as a day of jubilation. Memorial day was established to give residents of this nation an opportunity to pay trib u te to the memory of the Civil war dead, but it has devolved into a holiday of general memorial observance. We have never set aside a day for celebrating the end of the second world w ar because the conflict was never officially pronounced over until a few years after fighting actually stopped. Both world w ars ended after the m iddle of the year, so that observance of a V eterans day designed to pro vide an opportunity for paying respect to the memory of our w ar dead could well be held in th e fall. This ob servance could include consideration for the heroism of the men who fell in battle and those who continued to carry the torch of freedom from th eir fallen com rades a lte r the great battles of all generations. The memory of the men who fell on the battlefield and the veterans who are still among us are entitled to something better than a half-hearted observance of A r mistice day, a forced smile and a soggy handshake. If the American people cannot agree on the observance of Armistice day, they can agree on the im portance th at the role of the soldier, the sailor and the m arine has played in the lives of all of us and pay their proper respect. They can avoid the sham of a present-day Arm istice day observance. They can set aside a day on which to revere the deeds of the m en who fought that the rest of us m ight live in prosperity and hope.
