April. It was also m April, 1946,
that Portland architects arrived in
Nyssa to I ook over a proposed site
for the hospital.
Early in May the Nyssa Boat club
held a water carnival which net
ted $400 for the hospital fund.
The May fund raising event brought
in $5000. It was attended by 660
people who had purchased tickets
at $1 each.
In August, 1946. articles of incor
"S'
poration were filed with the state
corporation commissioner by the
Malheur Memorial Hospital associ
ation.
The incorporators named
were Frank Morgan, Robert Mc
Curdy and Orin Sumner.
The association was to issue mem
berships rather than stock, and
would be authorized to transact any
business in connection with the op
eration of the hospital.
The association, which up to this
time had been under the direction
of the Lion's club, now completed
the purchase of a site of land south-
west of Nyssa from H. R. Sherwood.
Later in August, all contributors to
the hospital fund were notified that
a meeting would be held on Sep
tember 6. At this meeting, the as
sociation was completed and on Sep
tember 12 a committee of 10 was
appointed to name a board of direct
ors.
The directors named were
Frank Morgan, Glea Billings, Mrs.
Ed Frost, Mrs. Maurice Judd, Rich
ard Maw. Bert Lienkaemper and
Jacob Fischer. Frank Morgan was
elected president, Qlea Billings,
secretary and Olean Wells, treas
urer.
Twenty-five thousand dollars had
been raised by October and the
architects, Roald. Schmeer and Her
rington of Portland were asked to
draw up plans. Again the campaign
for funds was renewed over this
entire territory.
The association
began soliciting again in November
and hoped that enough funds would
be secured so that federal aid might
be secured. Tentative plans for a
32-room hospital had been received
from the architects.
By January. 1947 eight individuals
and firms had contributed $1000
each, bringing the total to $33,000
The following m o n t h , George
Scheimer and Carl Hill collected
$884 in the Adrian community. The
total had grown to $35,000 by May
and the drawing of the hospital was
put on display where for the first
time the public could view the pro
posed plan.
The following fall, the hospital
association felt that the people of
this area were definitely united in
backing the hospital movement.
