Hardly a mile of their journey had passed when a colt, which Neil Gimmick was using as a pack- horse, 'broke into’ This gave the crowd an excellent exhibition of a packing outfit riding-out a oucking bronc. Strange to say, none of the eggs which were in cluded in the pack were broken luring the event. At tire noon hour on the divide, a fire was built and a large griddle iet up for preparation of bacon eggs, fried potatoes and coffee. While enroute, the pack-mule was poking sleepily along follow- ,ng tne group, but about one-fourth of a mile behind. The mule saw a group of horses going rapidly out of sight over a hill, apparently decided to catch up with the crowd. How was the mule to know that those disappearing horses were range horses and not her group? She didn't know, so she really put on speed. Suddenly Roy Holmes, gazing off across the country, let out a startled. “There goes my mule lifter those horses!” She al ready iiad almost a mile lead, but Holmes, Dminnck and Culbertson went after her. The mule acted very surprised and amazed when they caught up with her. Everyone arrived safely back at the trucks on the Morton ranch where the stock was re-loaded in the trucks. Larson Foresees Plenty O f Labor R. G. Larson o f Nyssa told mem bers of the Nyssa chamber of com merce at tts weekly luncheon Wed nesday that the Malheur County Farm Labor Sponsoring association expects to have ample labor in the county this year to handle the harvesting o f craps. Twenty-seven cabins are now oc cupied at the Nyssa labor camp, which is expected to be entirely filled soon. These workers wlJ be available for farm work in the county. The amount of hand labor to be done on the farms will be less this year due to a change in crop rotation. The reduction in sugar beet acreage will amount to approxi mately 30 per cent, which is about the same drop as in other sections of the country. The 30 per cent reduction will mean a shorter campaign and less payroll, tooth at the factory and on the farms. Mr. Larson, district manager of the Amalgamated Sugar company, said the campaign will last from 113 to 120 days. With spring weather conditions unfavorable, farmers have started irrigating their beets. Mr. Larson said the biggest re duction in row crops has been in lettuce. There has been a small increase in onion acreage. Pota toes have shown a decided spurt in the last few weeks. Farmers have felt that they must start producing lower cost crops, but probably have swung farther than they intended, Mr. Larson said. In a year or two they will probably swing back near the nor mal for this area. As yet no contract has been signed toy the United States and Mexico relative to the importa tion of Mexican workers to this country. However. Mr. Larson ex pressed the belief that the trans ient white labor will be sufficient for this area. PRELIMINARY WORK STARTED ON SCHOOL Leveling and filling in prep aration for construction of the new Nyssa school building was started Shis week by J. H. Wise and son of Boise. School Superintendent Henry Hartley told members oi the cham ber of commerce Wednesday noon “you might be surprised at the scope of the building” .
