NURSE—TEACHER—ADVISER
Collier’s Magazine
For a lot of nurses returning from war ser
vice— war veterans as truly as the men who did
the fighting— there need be no unemployment
problem. The public health nursing field is
open to many o f these women and is begging
for them to walk in,’’ said Mrs. Edna Farris,
county public health nurse.
“ About three times the pre-war number of
public health nurses will be needed in this
country in the years immediately ahead. That
works out to 69,000 persons, working for visit
ing nurse associations, industrial health ser
vices, county or city or state health departments,
boards of education or federal agencies such
as the U. S. public health service, the children’s
bureau or the office of Indian affairs.
“ Salaries run from around $1,200 to $7,500
a year. Working time, vacation and sick-leave
arrangements generally are good. Almost no
where is there any objection to a public health
nurse being married. You can pick your own
place to live and work— in a big city, small
town or rural area, in this country or some
other.
“ To become a public health nurse, you have
to be a graduate o f an accredited school of
nursing, and go through a postgraduate study
program in public health nursing. This latter
can often be taken care of while you are on the
job.
“ As a public health nurse, you are something
more than just a nurse. You are, to quote an
authority on the subject, nurse, health teacher,
advisor and sympathetic friend to your client
ele, whatever it may be.
If interested— and we imagine a lot of nurse-
veterans will be— write for further information
