First was the Nat ional Forestry Committee meeting of the Governor's conference held at Chicago. Principal items of the program in formulation as a result of this meeting were controlled cut ting, taxes, reforestation, federal acquisition and federal refunds In lieu taxes. The governor who is ch airman of this forestry committee, stated that his committee is under taking a nation-wide survey and sub-committees are now engaged In a study of various phases of the problem Involved. The other meet ing attended by the governor was the Republican Postwar Advisory Committee meeting at Mackinac Island, Michigan. A very courage ous, forward-looking statement of policies and principles was adopted at this meeting, said the governor CEILING TOO LATE The office of price administration fixed most price ceilings on fresh fruit too late to benefit growers and packers, E. L. Peterson, state director of agriculture, states. Pet erson also charged OPA with dis crimination In handling milk prices. REPUBLICAN MEDICINE MEN Governor Langley of Washington is scheduled to make the main address at the annual banquet dur ing the state convention of Oregon Republican Clubs at Salem Sept- will be introduced by Governor Sn ell. The orgtnlzatlon now has over ember 20 and 21. Governor Langley for president are Jack Lynch and 4500 paid up members. Candidates Ray Carr, both of Portland. Alice Paine, secretary of the Multnomah chapter, Is a candidate for the sec retaryship of the orginization. ALUMINA PLANT FIGHT Just before leaving his Marion county farm for Washington, D. C. Senator Charles L. McNary, senate minority leader, said he would con tinue his fight at the nations cap ital for location In Oregon of the propsed alumina plant. Labor shor tage in the northwest is given as the reason the war production boa rd made an adverse decision on Oregon or Washington sites. Senator McNary predicts that ne xt to the controversy over drafting fathers will be the fight of a well organized bloc which will be prep ared to oppose any attempt to fix farm support (guarantees above ce iling price levels. NEW LIQUOR PERMITS After the 30th of September cus tomers of state liquor stores will be required to have one of the newly designed "quantity permits” now being issued at all state liquor st ores. Each holder of a validated permit will be guaranteed one qu art or one fifth of whiskey and one quart or one fifth of gin, brandy or rum monthly. Specific brands cannot be assured and monthly qu otas are not cumulative. MERIT SYSTEM OFFICE The state board of control has a- pproved renting by the state board of health of rooms In the Henry building, Portland, as headquarters for the board of health's merit sy stem operations.
