The first designed to conserve but ter fat for butter wlU reduce by 20 percen tthe amount of Ice cream, and other frozen desserts manufactured. And the WPB figures If American child ren give up such candy novelties as chocolate Santa Clauses, and hearts there will be more break fast cocoa and chocolate bars. T hat’s because of a shipping short age of cocoa beans from which chocolate Is made. And while youngsters look for a "White Christmas’’. Uncle Sam Is doing his part to see that there wlU be the traditional tree. The War Production board, the Office of Defense Transportation and the Office of Price Administration have issued a Joint ruling exempting Christmas trees from wartime regu lations. However, In bringing in the yule tree it Is urged that no man power be used, which other wise would be engaged In essential war work. And the ODT cautious ly asks that any unnecessary use of rubber and gasoline be avoided. Christmas trees are not price con trolled. but the OPA Is asking that prices be held at last year’s level. It may seem to be a far cry from the perfumes bottle on mi lady's dressing table to synthetic rubber and smokeless gunpowder, but all three require alcohol, so in order to save an additional million gallons of ethyl alcohol each year for military production, the amount which can be used for toiletries and cosmetics is under War Pro duction board restriction. Normal ly about 5,000,000 gallons of alcohol go Into toiletries and cosmetics each year but now this amount Is cut to half. And your comer drug gist's sale of rubbing alcohol and alcohol compounds also are restrict ed. Here's good news for Mrs. Am erica. A new broom sweeps clean, but some 40,000 vacuum cleaners have Just been released for sale to civilians. These are from stocks of manufacturers and private brand sellers, and had been frozen by the War Production board since Octo ber 24. In addition, housewives will find offered for sale vacuums In the stocks of retailers and whole sale distributors which were also unfrozen recently. On the other hand, the WPB has Just prohibited the manufacture of attachments for these products. If you plan to start housekeeping soon, you'll be Interested to know that the OPA Is working on a price regulation which will save you money on purchase of an ice box. This will mean that specific dollara and cents price ceilings will be set for all non-mechlncal domes tic refrigerators. At present ice boxes are under the General Max imum regulation, selling a t the highest March price. In any In stance where the ceiling has been found to be excessive for any one model, the price will be lowered under the new regulation. Civilian use of alpaca for cloth ing, upholstery fabrics or drap eries has been prohibited. The limited supply of this material In this country will be used entirely for thearmed forces, particularly for uniforms to be worn by troops stationed In cold climates. Between now and Jan. 31st every car owner must have tires checked by an official OPA In spector, and here are some points to keep In mind on tire care: Drive only when absolutely necessary: drive under 36 miles an hour; the wartime speed limit, as much ax you can keep your tires properly Inflated, checking air pressure weekly: look at your tires between official Inspections, keeping wheels aligned and brakes equalized; and share your car with others.
