NYSSA FACED WITH CHALLENGE TO MAKE WAR EFFORT With 500 Malheur county youths out there fighting the battle for home freedom, the residents of Nyssa are faced with a challenge that should inspire this town to develop an all- out three-point program of assistance for our armed forces and the protection of this area. Malheur county boys are stationed through out the world, Australia, Inda, Ireland and other places, ready to lay down their lives for democracy, the preservation of which means the continuance of our way of life. From the blood-stained battlefields have come the cry for more tanks, airplanes and guns. The government with the assistance of the American people is largely answering that cry, but our efforts at home must be continued as they will be by the faithful lads over there. Wherever the soldiers, marines and sailors may go they find representives of the U.S.O., united service organizations, which are doing much to assist in keeping high the morale of the boys in home camps and in foreign fields. The U.S.O. provides entertainment, club rooms and other facilities for recreation for the boys through contributions of the folk at home. The boys have high praise for the U.S.O. clubs. To assist in this worthwhile project, Mal heur county residents will launch a drive for $2000 June 8. The committee has faith that Nyssa will share in this great work. Organiza tion of the local committee has not been com pleted, so if you are not called upon for a con tribution you should make your contribution to the Gate City Journal or any other firm willing to assist in the campaign. Americans have contributed liberally in the purchase of war bonds, but that program must be wholeheartedly continued in order that Malheur countv may reach its quota each month and thus avoid a compulsory plan of war bond sales. This money is used for the purchase of the implements of war, whereas the U.S.O. money is spent to personally benefit the sold iers. Nyssa is trailing behind the other sizable towns in Malheur county in the matter of the formation of a home guard. Vale has one com pany and Ontario has two companies that are training regularly. The best Nyssa has been able to do is sign up 30 men, who represent less than half of the number needed for a home guard unit. Enlistment in the home guard entails drill- ing less than two hours a week, but provides a man with the opportunity of serving his country on the home front in case of emergency. Any man would shoulder a gun and fight the enemy in case of attack, but his efforts would be much more effective if he were working act ively with an organized group. One of the reasons why local interested persons have been unable to form a guard unit is lack of men who have commissions in the army. However, that should be overcome by selection of men with leadership ability who have served in the armed forces. Whether Nyssa answers the challenge flung across the bounding main for an all-out effort depends entirely upon the residents of this small town that is adequately capable of doing a big share in the war program. business.
