Thirty Sign Up Tuesday Night; Others Are Ex pected To Sign Organization of a state guard unit In Nyssa was started at a meeting held in the Eagles hall Tuesday night with A. L. Heldt, commander of the American Leg ion presiding. If Nyssa organizes a guard unit the entire battalion will be kept in this county. Otherwise, the Burns unit will be placed In the Malheur county battalion. The re quest for organization of the local group came from Governor Charles A. Sprague through Colonel Ralph Cowgill, head of the national guard in Oregon. Mr. Heldt said “We know the officers were asleep at Honolulu and that the British were asleep when they said the Japanese could not go through the marshes toward Singapore. We may be asleep here. It Is up to you men”. Members of the guard could be sent any place in the state, but probably be sent only to points in the county and then for only two or three days time, or until the regular army soldiers reached the scene. Guardsmen are sub ject to one and one-half hours of training a week. Each man is re quired to furnish his own gun, if possible. The regular guard unit con sists of four officers and 60 en listed men. Reserves may be in creased to 157. Approximately 30 men signed enlistment papers Tuesday night. The enlistment rolls will be held open for those who did not attend the meeting. Enlistment blanks may be secured at the Golden Rule store and at the Journal office. Mr. Heldt said he expects th at several men will apply for enlistment at the Leg ion meeting tonight. C., to exercise an option to purchase the Mrs. Emma Qulnby property along Snake river a short distance north of the Amalgamated Sugar company fac tory for establishment of a semi permanent farm labor camp. A budget of approximately $100,- 000 has been approved for con struction of a utility building and 300 labor shelters. The utility building, which will contain sani tary and laundry facilities and showers, will be of frame con struction. H ie camp will accomodate ap proximately 300 families here for seasonal work. Howard Bertsch of Ontario, area supervlcor of the FSA, said that the option will probably be ex ercised within the next few days, but that no definite announce ment has been made as to when construction will be started. The camp will be semi-standard, so that the shelters will be taken down In the winter. No permanent labor homes will be constructed this year. Herbert Fisher, who Is operat ing a dairy on the Qulnby prop erty. said today th at he la un certain as to his future plans. As It Is necessary to care for the labor situation until the per manent camp Is established, th * FSA will operate the mobile camp at least until June 30 at the old site on the Nyssa-Adrlan high way.
