First there was the assignment of David W Eccles. executive sec retary to the governor, to be state coordinator of wartime production. industrial Simultaneously this announcement came the with an nouncement that Roy H. Mills, bus iness representative for state insti tutions was being lifted out of the board of control and placed at the head of the state budget division. Then out of a clear sky came the resignation of Daniel J. Fry as sec retary to the board of control and state purchasing agent and with the announcement that the board had accepted Fry's resignation came the further announcement that Mills, previously slated for the post of budget director, would be retain ed in the board of control in the capacity of secretary with Sam Gillette, veteran employee of the beard promoted to the post of state purchasing agent. Eccles, in his new post will spend most of his time in Portland and Washington, organizing Oregon’s industries for war time production and promoting defense contracts for these Industries in order to keep the wheels of Industry turning in this state. Mrs. Helen Webster Beh- lar, of the governor’s staff, who has been pinch hitting as secretary to the governor since the governor's secretaries began marching away to the wars some 18 months ago will now take over the title as well as the responsibilities of this post Fry who has served as secretary to the board of control and state pur chasing agent since 1935 has ac cepted an attractive offer from a large eastern drug firm. The various changes still leaves the post of budget director vacant and it is understood that the gov ernor is casting about for a -.om- petent man to fill this job, one of the most important in the gaver- nor’s cabinet. At the present time there is an extra $2,000 dollars in the noxious weed fund. Malheur county has four pre dominating kinds of noxious weeds. Even counting the new lands fully one half the farms of the county are Infected more or less with at least one of these kinds of noxious weeds. O f course if we request it the county weed inspectors will bring a ere and gas our weeds. That is a sure way to get rid of a small patch of weeds, and not too ex pensive either if we do it before the patch is too big as the county does it at cost of the gas. W hat hurts is the farmer who doesn't care for them and lets the seed ripen and spread onto his neighbors by a combine, by hay, livestock or the wind. O f course we have a law against that but what is a la if it is not enforced.
