I }ATE CITY JOURNAL PAGE EIGHT Cow Hollow By I h l Happy h iM T . About the only thing us Hollowltes can think of now 1. war. Ole, down at the corner store, about expressed the opinion of all when he said, "Well, they asked for It lets give it to them fast and furious.” We all realize It is going to mean some more hardships for all of us. In our last Orange meeting a neighboring Grange presented a resolution for us to Ok., asking the government to exempt farm labor from the draft. It Is a fact that boys grow’d up on the farm are skilled farm labor, while many of them raised In town especialy In the larger towns and cities dont know which end of a horse collar to put up and wouldent know a cultivator from a mowing machine. Of course he would learn but it would take some time for him to be as eflciant as If he had been on a farm all his life. Well now we shall expect to have to use our heads and get along as best we can There will be a big demand for overalls next summ.tr f r man' of the farmers wives and c ughtei , will don overalls and go j gulary to the field. Jor iie Hamilton returned home last week from Oklahoma. After f tending three weeks back there 1 e sa' s “I thinks more of Cow Hol low n w than ever before.” When one Is here all the time Mid has to cope with all the handi caps here they have a tenancy to forget the handicaps of back home. When we have to float, corrigate Mid Irrigate our grain fields, It Is pleasant to remember that we did not have to do that back home. When we harvest the crop we are too busy to remember that back there most of the time it has either been too wet or too dry for to raise a crop. A band of sheep was put on the Chet Sage place Tuesday for to eat off the pasture left by Roy Manley when he moved about a month ago. The new renter has’nt moved on the place yet. There is very little sheep pasture available in Cow Hollow this year. There will be a little on the Jim Trummel place and posslbley some at Frank Parkers. Frank now has stock enough for to pasture his all off but there Is so much to do that he hasn’t got his fence up yet. Elza Nlccum has all the luck In stock even if he dosent have much luck In raising hay for them. His seven cows has brought him two sets of twin calves In the last three months. The Reclamation is certainly give- lng the main canal a going over where it goes through Cow Hollow. Ever since we been here It has been a source of worry. Hanging, as It does on the face of these hills, like a pair of eyebrows, they have never yet been able to keep all the water In It. What they are doing now should get results. They are takeing the most dangerous places and takeing four feet off the upper side and then hauling in good clay soli and glvelng the canal a two foot linelng on both sides. They have a machine for packing this clay soil in like a solid road bead. Sounds queer but the upper side of the canal must be lined the same as the lower side. Even at that the water some times works a hole in the upper side and runs even a hundred yards and comes out as a seep below the canal Some of these seeps never seem to grow but most of them increase un till they locate the source and get them stopped. Figuring out how to keep their twisting, turning, hill climbing ca nal whipped in to service at all times Is a man sized job Getting the Job done Is plenty work for sev eral men. Professional This canal will be callad U£i* n n t summer tc carry the life’s tap fcr an enormoug amount of derir.^ latM Now Is the time 10 prepah for next summers shortage of labor Lower Bond Harry Russell was called to civil service guard duty at the Owyhee dam Sunday evening. Word has been received from Mr and Mrs. Charles Purdy and Mrs. C C KUburn. who are vacationing In California, that they are having a grand time and that Mr. Purdy Is Improved In health.
