Senators are beginning to look forward to the
adjournment of the present session of congress
“ due to the coming hot weather” .

The taxpayers of this nation are paying
these men good hard cash, and plenty of it, for
a year’s work— nothing was said when they
asked for the job, of the hot weather, or mend
ing political fences. Their promise, as is always
the case, was that they would give us good,
loyal, efficient service.
This nation, at the present time, faces a
very gloomy future, as far as international af
fairs are concerned and it is up to the men in
congress to see that our course is guided along
the safest and best route, and they cannot do
that if they are back home delivering a lot of
pre-campaign promises, and trying to vindicate
the stand they have taken during the present
session.
There may be two reasons for this desire
to adjourn— one that they want to be away from
Washington, in order to sidestep any responsi
bility of what this government does and then
passing the buck onto someone else. Or that
they want to come home and enter the political
campaign.
To take care of this latter situation we
would suggest that the congress take a leave of
absence for forty-five days to coincide with the
national party conventions, and then get back
to Washington and S T A Y ON TH E JOB U N

W E CAN BLAM E OURSELVES
L O T o f acrimony is being heaped on the
heads of our recent past presidents and
the present one, for our lack o f national defense,
all of which is “ chickens coming home to roost” .
Over the vast expanse of these United
States for the past twenty years, there has been
a howl of indignation go up from the citizenry,
at the mere mention of increasing our army,
navy or air corps. And now that the possibility,
a very real possibility, o f our having to defend
our country, these same pacifist howlers are
laying the blame on every one except on the one
where it belongs.

Remember the very concerted drive there
was not so many years back, in fact within the
last two years, for the disbandonment o f the
college and high school R. O. T. C.?
It is conservatively estimated now that we
will have to spend somewhere in the neighbor
hood of $4,000,000,000 to get our armed forces
somewhere near the proper strength and pro
perly equipped to even begin to defend our
country. In other words we are going to spend
$10 now where we could have done about the
same thing with only $1.
President Roosevelt has our vote o f approval
on his plan to call the National Guard into fed
eral service— for these troops are in a real sense
our first line defense on land. The only nigger
in the wood pile being that they are partially
trained and equipped. W e have to face the
music and we might as well face it now, for lack
o f training was the cause of a great number of
our soldiers being on the casualty list in the last
war. Another thing it takes at least a year to
turn out a real fighting soldier, and this could
probably be cut down to six to nine months with
our National Guard troops.
