NYSSA GATE CITY JOURNAL’S PROGRAM Co-operative Marketing Association for Malheur Fanners A Properly Equipped Trailer Camp A City Park A Comprehensive Street Improvement Plan AN ANSWER FOR STEVE Ely of Roseburg wants to know S TEVE “Why Do They Lie?” and we can answer Steve right offhand. They lie because they want to be elected to a better paying job than they could get in the business world. We are talking of politicians, and we reckon Steve meant poli ticians when he accuses both the major parties of making platform pledges and the men elected on those platforms not keeping them. Of course he meant politicians—those guys who get a com fortable living so long as they can hang onto a public office job. In the first place, the people who vote are re sponsible for letting the politicians get away with everything but murder. We are a nation of non-thinkers. We swallow the dope handed out in election campaigns and let it go for what it is —a campaign promise made only to get votes. It’s a fine technical point. The “party” makes the platform promise; not the candidate. There’s a law that says candidates may not make prom ises. It’s a nice, sweet law. The party platform does the promising, and the men who are the party’s nominees are not bound to do anything about it afterward if elected. That’s your answer, Steve.—Klamath Free Press. COME THROUGH, OR ELSE— W llTE expect federal office holders, post- masters and all others who are the bene ficiaries of federal largess to do their mightiest for the democratic party,” says a stern state ment by Chairman Tierney to those who have not been coming across in the Jackson day drive for funds. The inclusion in the command of “benefi ciaries of federal largess” has an ominous im plication. It does, indeed. Largess is a gift or do nation, a present, a bounty bestowed. Does Chairman Tierney address the relief clients, and all who are receiving blue stamps, or does he only imply that federal office holders’ salaries include a bounty over and above what they earn? The relief clients need not be alarmed. Mr. Tierney cannot do anything to them, and besides he probably threw in what he said about largess just for emphasis. It is a good word. But if there is not something written between the lines in his warning to office holders that they have more to fear from “remote” republican success than they have from the Hatch bill, then we never saw invisible ink. You are warned, gentlemen, that now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of the party, and that you are being watched by a powerful democratic gestapo.— The Oregonian. Some of the Oregon papers are suggesting that Governor Sprague may go out for Senator McNary’s mantle as U. S. Senator, claiming that McNary has actually an honest-to-goodness chance for the Republican presidential nomina tion.— Klamath Free Press.
