NYSSA GATE CITY JOURNAL, THURSDAY, AUGUST 31, 1939 Ye Snooper’s Column Things About Nyssa's Shops On Monday morn didst a shop ping tour make and ot a truth didst suddenly realize that fall was here, fo r with all the newest in suits and Crocks now on display no femme wilt long cling to her summer gar ments. And at the Atkeson Emporium didsst snoop out the most alluring array of autumn gowns in those fluttering soft shades of wine and oluts, done up with the new bustle effects and finished off in the new gold and jeweled clasps and pins. Then for milady who doest ever haw: an eye on smartness there are blacks in soft wools and silks with a touch of white or gleaming metal to ward off any somberness and suits for afternoon affairs or tailor ed for the career miss. But to really get any true idea of their excep tional value and loveliness it will take a personal birds eye view. And at Barney Wilsons grocery mart late summer and autumn fruits and vegetables are arriving fresh every day. Something new added to the already full up list of seasonal edibles. Pears full yel lowed and sweet with the juice sun ripened, golden peaches and early apples, melons of all sorts and sizes, a basket of ground cherries looking for a good friendly jam jar and still strawberries red and as lucious as in the first days of spring. And the joy of it at prices that all can af ford to eat their fill now and to can for the winter months just Ahead. And what with the autumn breezes so nearly here and winter already well on his way tis a good time to splc up the home place a bit and to make sure that all is battened snug against the storms that will be sure to accompany them. And at the Nyssa lumber company they do have a remodeling and home repairing financing plan that wilt pya any home owner to investigate. If it be they have in mind some home remaking but lack the funds to carry on. And wast there one among us who didst not take advantage of the Golden Rule school day sale this past week, when ever- thing needful could be purchase; at svjh saving prires. Of course a new pair with a loud and lasting squeak Is always popular with a prideful young owner when greet ing school mates again. It sort 'o proclaims ones advance in im portance in life during the summer months. Or do they still make them with such add niceties. But what ever the season at the Nyssa theatre there is always tops in movie shows and line entertain ment for family or guests. And tis a comfortable place to relax, what with the softness of the up holstery and the shaded lights dur ing performances, so that when the good show 1st ended even if thy John didst grumble a bit at having to spic up a bit after dinner for a jaunt into the night he is bound to bless thee for making him make the effort. Then if it be that the little wife ist a clever girl she will guide him next door to the Owyhee drug and appease him further by filling his tummy with one of those fine ice cream soda's that the bosses lady doest so cleverly concoct in there. Full of real flavor and delicious rich ice cream which they do freeze on the spot. Sure 'tis a wholesome and most palatble dish. But for those who cannot coax the scales down there are delectable and cooling plain sodas. And they do satisfy without adding an ounce. And speaking of reducing didst know that all protagonists of the cult do advocate lean meat. 'Tis body sustaining without weight add ing. And at the Nyssa Packing com pany store they do ever have a wide variety from which to choose and right now those steaks they do vend be above average in goodness and at no added cost. But If it be that thou art among those of the Lords chosen who these summer months have watched thy winter's meat fatten on the hoof in the family stall then it Is that thou wilt be gleeful when thou hast In spected and investigated those new lockers and the freezing plate at the Polar Cold storage plant which Dr. Marshall and Mrs. Doc do keep open the 24 hours of a day for those who keep their food stuffs freshen ed therein. For if do remain there from autumn till spring and back again twill be as fresh and sweet tasting as it was the minute it left the freezing plate and found a per manent cold resting spot in the locker which wilt bear thy name. But with autumn time come aut umn winds and the dust they do carry doest seep and sift and noth ing be sacred against its entrance. But let this not worry thee. For after all there be much that is dirt ier and far harder to remove than nice clean eastern Oregon dust. Especially if one wilt provide them seves with a good cleaning powder or soap such as ist merchandised at the Food Mart and the Golden Rule grocery departments. Thy head ist In a dither what with getting the last stitches on Susies dresses and the buttons on Johnnies shirts, and John's socks have long since all landed in the mending basket, but if it were not that the family cupboard wast bare and thou wilt just have to take a day out for baking thou might at least get one pair off the lot for John. Then worry not. But send thy John to the Nyssa Bakery and tell him to get what he wants. And if thou art a wise Eve's daughter thou wilt send the junior sprout along also. For little eyes see much and they wilt come home laden with goodies to last a week. Nourishing wholesome and satisfying things that when the week ist ended per chance the help mate wilt suggest Ghat thou make it a permanent practice. Thus eliminating of bak ing day. But with the youngsters all in school again, thou wilt find the need of a perfectly perking car again for there wilt be no little feet to run the elrands now. But if thou wilt take the old carry all to Ed Pruyn for a short stay he wilt have it perking and purring sweetly for thee and all the errands can be at tended to in nothing flat. Then there wilt be old coats to be VALLEY VIEW Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Erstad and family, Mrs. B. E. Hyatt of Boise and Mrs. Bartlett of Los Angeles were Sunday dinner guests of the Bratton family. Mr. and Mrs. Hans Oft left Aug. 14 for a two weeks’ vacation in Omaha, Neb. Darrella Pickering of Grand Coulee, Wash., visited friends in this community from Thursday until Sunday. Miss Mira Noah was hostess to a surprise handkerchief shower Wed nesday afternoon for Miss Jean Countryman who will leave in Sep tember to attend Oregon State col lege. Guests were Mrs. Jack Downs and daughters, Mrs. Chas Christen son, Eulah and Gladys Bratton, Sybil Penn. Irene Amidon, Wilma Bethel and Elna Brown. School will open at Valley View September 11. Those from here who attended the pioner picnic at Vale Friday were Mr. and Mrs. W. G. Armstrong and Mrs. Martha Amidon and son.
