SEVEN POINTS TO SOMETHING OR OTHER
CCORDING to the Idaho Statesman, Sec
retary of Agriculture, Henry A. Wallace,
turns loose upon a waiting (?) world, seven
points that he says are necessary to stabilize
agriculture.
We take the seven points, one by one.
First. Mr. Wallace says that the farmer “must
get a fair share of the national income.”
We wonder if he thinks that he is lending his
support to this essential requirement, when he
shuts off the American farmer from more than
twenty-five per cent of the domestic sugar mar
ket? He is one of the coterie of lip service poli
ticians that believes in protecting the American
farmers markets just so long as the “big money”
people are not hurt.
Two. Soil fertility must be maintained and
improved. Well, there is not much in that point.
Farmers are a lot more anxious to maintain the
fertility of their soil than anyone else would be,
and as far as we know have done a good job of
it in the past—they have had to or lose their
farms.
Three. Supplies and prices of farm products
must be stable from year to year, on a basis fair
to fanners and consumers. If politicians would
get it into their heads that the best way to main
tain equitable prices to consumer and farmer, is
to stop gambling in farm products, and do some
thing about it—in the way of putting an end to
gambling by curbing wheat pits and kindred
tnieverv, both the farmer and the consumer
would benefit.
Four. Farmers must continue to improve their
efficiency so as to match the efficiency of the
people in the towns and cities.
Wallace fails to ring the bell on this one. He
accuses the American sugar beet growers of be
ing inefficient, based on a dollars and cents cost
of production. About the only comparison that
he has to base this assumption on is with off
shore production. In the Philippines for in
stance, laborers are getting sixty cents a day.
Yet in the United States the sugar beet growers
are bound by law to pay their field workers
many times that amount. Efficiency, indeed!
Five. Farmers must have as nearly as possible
security of tenure on farms which for the most
part are family sized.
All that we can add to this is Amen.
Six. The co-operative way of buying, selling
and living should be brought to pass as fast as it
can be demonstrated to be genuinely efficient
and in line with the understanding and training
of the people.
To the buying and selling objective we take
no issue. But on this matter of “co-operative
living”—we wonder. Surely Mr. Wallace was
not thinking of Socialistic or Communistic trend
when he thought this one up? If he did we
would like to bet a plugged nickel to a doughnut
that he will have a tough time trying to get two
or more of our average American farm wives to
share the same kitchen stove or washing ma
chine together!
Seven. Farmers must develop a love for the
soil and for farming as a way of life which rises
superior to the old-fashioned concept of farm
ing as a wfay of exploitation and speculation.
With our association of farmers we have yet
to find one who had the least idea of “exploita
tion and speculation.” As for the love of the
soil—certainly a farmer must have it. For how
else could a person work year in and year out.
some years with no return for the labor, and
others just enough to carry him over to the next,
without he had this “love of the soil.”
Better come again Mr. Wallace, but take a
look around at our American citizens on the
farms, first!
