their prosperity shall increase many fold.
Blessed is the woman who sends in a written ac
count of a party or a wedding, for she shall see
the details ami names o f her guests correctly
reported. Blessed are those who do not expect
the editor to know everything, but who tell him
whenever an interesting event occurs in which
they are interested, for they shall have a better
newspaper in their town. Blessed are they who
get their copy in early, for they shall occupy
a warm space in the editor’s heart. Blessed are
they who co-operate with the editor in his effort
in behalf of the community, for their town shall
be known to all men, far and wide, as a good
place in which to live and do business. Blessed

SUGAR BEET EFFICIENCY
much concern emlnates from the office
S O office
of Secretary of Agriculture Wallace
and his henchman Dr. Bernhard, head of the
sugar section, about the “ inefficiency” of the
American sugar producer. This concern is
based on the “ subsidy” paid to the IJ. S. grow
ers and producers.
This week there was handed to us. by Albert
Pfeiler, local farmer, a copy of the Pacific Rural
Press in which is found an interesting hit of
news concerning this subsidy. The Press quotes
an official report which shows that 87 Puerto
Rico growers received payments of more than
$100,000 each and two got pavments above
$500,000!
Now it is brought to light that the American
farmer is nut the only one who can be accused
o f "inefficiency.”
It might be a good idea if Mr Wallace and Dr.
Bernhard compare the wage scale that is DE
M ANDED of the American farmer, to those
paid to tropical workers that live on fish and
rice. How about the $8 an acre for blocking
and thinnings or the $2 for the first hoeing?
That does not sound like any 60 cents a day to
us.
Farmers, particularly in beet sugar sections,
as well as all other farmers should contact their
Senator and Congressman, especially the latter,
asking them to support the Senate amendment
to the Sugar act, which would give to the
American grower an increased acreage.
There is soundness in the Senate amendment
— because an increased sugar beet cane acre
age means less acreage in competition in the
grain growing business. And Mr. Senator and
Congressman- this is no time for party align
ment— the farmers of this section voted for you
to protect their interests— they have the right
now, to demand o f you a vote in favor of legisla
tion that will shut out unfair products, produced
at what amounts to starvation wages in the
United States.
And to the farmers, whether sugar beet grow
ers or not, set down N O W — write to our Oregon
congressmen and demand that thev vote favor
ably on the Senate amendment to the Sugar act.
The intimation has been let out that the Presi
dent has lieen persuaded to veto the amend
ment, but if we can get enough votes in the
House, it may change his views on the matter.
