Things About Nyssa's Shops
In the manner of the late O. O.
McIntyre.
Up betimes and about
our chore and were In a funk as to
what to say. Much doest happen
each day but the great ones write
knowingly and convincingly of a f
fairs of tire nation and abroad and
the little things pass by and art
forgotten.
And yet it is tile little things that
make up our daily lives. Each one
of us. And tis the little things that
make up the memories that we
carry down through the years. A
smile of a friend when our spirits
arc weary, happy laughter with
friends, that moment we realized
that a long illness was soon to be
ended, a family picnic by the river
edge at the close of day.
One of the things we remember
most vividly is the smile of
a
mother as she looked at her son.
Fattish he was and in the awkward
ness of adolesence but to her, al
together lovely the acme of perfec
tion and from her eyes beamed such
a light as we have not been able
to forget. It is that of mother love
that fires the lamp of human pro
gress throughout the world and in
all time. Tire light that no painter
hast ever captured on canvas. A
ray of that Infinite Love that strug
gles through mankind to produce
its own image in the affairs of this
world, too ethereal for reproduction
here. Imperishable and indestruc-
table it becomes a gullding beam to
every generation.
And of late we have been remind
ed how unkind the newspaper
photographs are to the ladies. They
always seem to catch their most un
becoming angle and if there be one
tired line lurking in her facial
muscles it does stand forth as a
stone bruise on a small boys bare
toe.
Take the first lady of the land,
Mrs. Roosevelt. Surely she must
have a personality that radiates and
charms her audience her eyes must
bq sparkling and lovely to look at.
Even in the news reels it does seem
that her skin must be above aver
age but all that the picture doest
show ist the irregularities and an
gularities of her strong make up. I f
on ly there was some way of showing

her keen sense of humor, her un
derstanding and clear mental vis
ion. For tis for these things that
people who do see her face to face
remember and admire her.
And we were reminded of this
just lately when we saw a picture
of Governor and Mrs. Sprague at a
formal banquet. Dull and pudgy
with a lined and beshadowed face
did Oregon's first lady seem and
we knew that 'twas not true.
For twas our priviledge and hon
or to dine with her in a small group
last summer while she was playing

quainted trip.
of pickles that his Molly knows how
to fix right. And the Wilson Gro
cery store wouldst remind him that
there wast the place where always
one could get the good staples a fel
low is raised on and which wilt
stick to his ribs when a hard days
work ist ended. Any
way why
bother for Barney ist no laggard on
that fancy stuff as well. Avacadoes.
and Texas grapefruit and banauas
from Central America and sprouts
from California and soon now rhu
barb from Arizona. Well one does
not have to travel any more to get
what they want to eat with such
a market at home.
Tall she is with a stately dignity
that is offset by a kindly and hu
morous sparkle from her youthful
brown eyes.
Her hair ttiough
speckled a bit with gray is warm
brown and softly waved about her
face where on nature has deflty left
some character marks, but by no
means are they unlovely to look at
nor is there a haggard and unhappy
temper marked thereon.
Rather does our first lady sparkle
with a ready humor and a firm
understanding of the problems and
needs of the day. Neither is she ag-
gresive and buptious, but a gracious,
well groomed, easy to look at ad
dition to any company.
But we
do wish the photographers wouldst
do something to prove it. Else con
fine their picture taking to the
males who canst appear as out
moded as Aunt Samantha’s bustle
and still be praised for their mental
attibutes and wit.
And so a fabulous city has rais
ed itself Phoenix like on a mud flat
in San Francisco bay spreading
itself fan wise from the north end
of Yerba Buena Island or Goat Hill
as 'tis known in the Navy. And
but a few years ago we did each
morning and evening watch
the
huge dredges digging up the mud
and silt from other places in the
bay and dumping it there seemingly
because there was no place else to
put it and now it is the home of
tropical flora, exotic flowers and
fishes, game from Oregon and dis
plays from all over the world. And
when the last light is dimmed at
the end of the year and the last
echo of happy laughter hast floated
out over the lapping waters 'twill be
the western home of flying ships.
But this summer there will be sweet
music of fine bands playing in fog
drenched pavilions, crowds pushing
through the exhibits and whine of
the hurdy gurdy and the blare of
the merry-go-round on the Gayway
and all the country wilt journey
there to look and to play and to re
turn home again to remember for
the rest of their lives this fairy land.
And while they are away the
traveler wilt gorge himself
on
strange foods and fresh fishes and
smack his lips at the alluring dis
play of fruits and vegetables that
line the city streets and country
roads. And wilt in that city by the
Golden Gate stop at the flower
stalls to purchase nose gay or a
corsage. Lovely they are right now
with the sweet odor of Narcissus
and frisiias and violets the yellow
acacia and the pink of the flower
ing almond, and the fat Italian
vender ever ready with a suggestion
of what is mete and right to buy.
Lovely wilt they be throughout the
year and no better reminder of the
changing season be there than these
brilliant fragrant flowers oases on
the city’s gray side walks.
But the color of them cannot
compare with the brilliance of the
sun setting behind our distant
hills, nor shedding its early morning
light on the far away snow caps, nor
their sweet odor one -half so heady
as the scent of the sage that comes
in with the summer breeze at twi
light.
And the foods that one doest so
relish for the time wouldst. in the
end pall and permanent meal pro
vider wouldst sigh for a piece of
good old home made pie and a bit
And if 'tis a fine steak with
mushrooms and garlic for flavoring

and do have a variety to please
every taste and the fat and slim
pocket book alike.
And doest think what a blessing
fresh milk is to the American
housewife . I f thou doest not be
lieve just try living some place
where tis not available. Thy most
trusted cake recipe wilt do thee dirt
and all things cooked with the can
ned substitute wilt taste strange to
thy palate to say nothing of thy
Johns. So twice are we blessed in
this vicinity, first because always
canst we procure fresh milk at the
Gate City Dairy and second be
cause tis ever pure and sanitized so
that one can drink and use of it
freely and without fear of taint.
And at no place canst one get bet
ter candies nor fresher nor at such
reasonable prices as at the Peggy
Panty and now they do be giving
away such wonderful bonuses as
well that one canst afford to risk
a pound or two in avoirdupois just
to take advantage of these unsuual
gifts. And of them all we do have
out eyes gleamed on the soft pink
blanket. All wool it be and cello
phane wrapped and as dainty as a
wedding gift.
But twill also so
warm the cockles of an olsters spine
as well. Snuggy it be and given free
with the Pantry’s bonus plan.
And speaking of plans the plan of
the Nyssa theatre management is
ever to have bigger and better pro
grams. but we do say that if they
beat those of the past week they
wilt have to go some. For each one
wast par excellent and too good to
be missed.
The wind doest whistle the song
of spring about the house comers
these nights and the warm sun of
the day doest bring promise of
early grasses and flowers.
The
gophers art out in full force so that
already we do feel sorry for the poor
irrigators in the days to come. Re
membering a sudden descent we
didst make last year into one of
the water filled warrens. Up to our
knees we sank and wouldst no doubt
have still been going if our perman
ent puller outer hadst not arrived
for our rescue.
And speaking of gift blankets has
cast thy peepers upon those service
able coverlets that the Gamble store
do be giving away with each wash
ing machine purchased. And the
machine itself do be a bargain along
with the best of them even without
the blanket.
And what with the spring comes
much that wilt need repairing about
the homestead. The chicken coops,
the pig houses, the screens on the
windows and the doors made fly
proof. And Mr. Ostrom at the
Nyssa Lumber company says
no
matter what the job. It will pay
the builder to sec him and get his
reasonable prices.
And verily verily, summer must

And doest the family revolt at
green vegetables and do show no
concern for vitlmins nor vegetable

of a dither for fear rickets wilt
spring out in the midst of them.
Fret not thy self nor them either,

And art of a mind to take advan

We didst talk with a farmer on
the land who doest live where roads
are a pain in the neck if not nil al
together and he didst say that they
kept the family tractor by the side
of the gate so that if the old heap
stalled they would be sure of In
stant aid. And we do know that
that trusty tractor be a John Deere

ridge Implement and hast given
them more than satisfactory ser
vice with a minimum of care and
so do they all that be sold at that
