NYSSA GATE CITY JOURNAL, THURSDAY, JUNE 10, 1937 Society BRIDE HONORED Miss Thelma Hickey, who became the bride of Mr. Charles Barnhart Sunday, was the honor guest at two shower given last week In the Ar cadia district. On Thursday the Sew and Sew club entertained for Miss Hickey at the home of Mrs. Otis Bulladd. A mock wedding cere mony was very cleverly preformed for entertainment. The honor guest received many lovely gifts. On Friday afternoon the ladles of the Nazarene church surprised Miss Hickey at her home, tendering her with a lovely shower of wedding gifts. THURSDAY CONTRACT CLUB Mrs. Frank Hall entertained the Thursday Contract club last week. Substitutes playing with members were Mesdames George Mitchell, Louis Wiltshire, Mrs. Arthur Cock- rum of Grants Pass and Miss Eva Boydell. Mrs. Artie Robertson won the high score award. 8 - - ENTERTAIN MONDAY Mrs. Ronald Burke and Mrs. Herschel Thompson entertained with a lovely bridge party Monday evening at the home of Mrs. Burke. Four tables of cards were in play with Miss Margaret Hunt winning high score award and Mrs. Emil Paulus won the traveling prize. The hostesses served dessert at the close. 8 - - THURSDAY CLUB T The Thursday club members met with Mrs. Eldon Jensen last week for their regular party. Guests playing with members were Mes dames Bob Thompson, Leslie Mc Clure and Charles Drewitz. At the close of the afternoon Mrs. Warren Blodgett held high score and Mrs. Thompson had the traveling prize. 8 - - CELEBRATES BIRTHDAY Those who helped J. N. Thomason enjoy his 60th birthday dinner, in cluding a treat of large, luscious home grown strawberries. were Chas. Thomason family, Aunt Mat- tie Thomason, Dick Tensen and the Dave Martin family of Wilder. APPLE VALLEY By MISS NORMA STOUT Boman Vertrees and Ralph Sum- my left Thursday evening for a place near Moscow where they will work in the blister rust until fall. They were accompanied by Frank Smart of Ten Davis, Eugene Rubins and Doiel Smyser of Parma. Vernadine Caldwell js spending the week visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Conley Wilson of Nampa. Charles and Virginia Schultz re turned home Tuesday from Warm Lake where they spent a few days outing. Mrs. R. A. Rogers and Ruby were dinner guests Sunday at the home of Mrs. Cecil Scott. Mr. M. A McDonald of Califor nia, who was a former resident of this community, was calling on old friends here Thursday. He Is stay ing at the home of his daughter In Ontario. Mr. and Mrs.Terlistner of Wels- er were dinner guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Eller- broeck Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Reed of Parma were dinner guests Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gene Reed. In the afternoon they went to the ball game at Huston for whose side Ralph Stevens is pitching. Mrs. Wesley Oauntlett and child ren of Oregon arrived Wednesday to spend a week visting at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. R. S. ^ ^ McIntyre. Grace Gooing and Vlrgina Schultz were members of the sex tette who sang In Caldwell at an Eastern Star oonvention Monday evening. Mrs. Fred Miller and Mrs. Hicks called at the home of Mrs. R. 8 McIntyre Friday afternoon. Mrs. Levi Stevens, Mrs. McIntyre and Mrs. Oauntlett and children were guests at the home .pf Mrs. Forrest Reed of Parma Monday. Gene Reed. Lawrence Triece and Ura Robinson left the forepart of the week to spend a few days fish ing at L 06 t Lake. BIG BEND NEWS By MRS. E. H. BRUMBACH Mr. and Mrs. Gundry, returned African missionaries will hold ser vices Sunday evening at Wade school house to which all In the community are Invited to attend. Bible school opened Monday In Wade school house with Miss Grace Snyder and Miss Betty Milligan of Nampa teachers. While In the com munity the young ladles are mak ing their home with Mrs. F. A. Miller. School will be held only one week and will close with a specially prepared program. A large crowd attended the chicken pie supper held at Big Bend park hall Wednesday evening. A splendid musical program, readings and tap dancing was enjoyed.*The proceeds were used to pay the ex penses of Four-H members to sum mer school session. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Dennis and two children of Idaho Falls arrived last Friday for a visit with Mrs. Dennis parents, Mr. and Mrs. Jess John ston. Mrs. C. C. Hunt and Margaret of Nyssa were Bend callers Tuesday. Mr. and Mrs. Hughes, former neighbors of the Eskew family In Missouri, were their guests during latter part of the week. Grandpa Allender, a former resi dent, now living In Roswell Is re ported recovering from a very sick spell. Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Brumbach spent Firday in Nampa. Mr. and Mrs. H. R. Hatch left Sunday for The Dalles to attend State Grange. Miss Betty Jean Each us and Gladys Sparks left Sunday for Cor vallis to attend two weeks summer school. Mrs. Claude Eachus and Mrs. E. Eskew were shopping in Boise last Tuesday. Miss Luoille Hindellter of Mars- ing arrived Tuesday for a visit with her sister Mrs. Dyre Roberts and family. Mr. and Mrs. Dan Holly of Adrian and Miss Virginia Miller spent Wednesday in Boise. Leo Betts has rented his place to Mr. Dryden for the coming sea son. Mr. Betts is ditch rider on government ditch. Miss Eleanor Betts of Caldwell was visiting in this vicinity during the past week. Kenneth Eskew (returned home 3unday from Eugene where he at tended the university during the past year. Miss Grace Johnston and Ross Johnston returned home from col lege Sunday. H ie former attends the university at Eugene, the latter at Corvallis. Robert Fagan of Ottawa. Illinois arrived Tuesday for a visit in the Phelan and Brumbach homes. Miss Mary Weir, who taught at Ironside the past year, returned home to spend her summer vacation with her parents Mr. and Mrs. Robert Weir. Mr. and Mrs. Case Muntjewerff were dinner guests In the Gerrttt Muntjewerff home Thursday even ing. Mrs. Irene Nightingale spent a couple of days In Ontario last week. A delightful dinner was held at the Jake Hofferber home Sunday honoring Mrs. Boersma on her birthday. Jack Hole is helping Mr. Allan put up his hay. Miss Margaret Hunt visited old time friends in this community this week. She was a visitor at the Pete Van der Oord home Wednesday. Mrs. John Wolfe is on the sick list. Ed Henderson Is Installing an el ectric fence on his new ranch. Mr. and Mrs. Lunger were week end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Dallar- hyde of Frultland . Mr. and Mrs. M. Suiter and daughter were Ontario visitors Tuesday. Mr .and Mrs. Qyram have moved out to their ranch on the new land. Mrs. Dan Corbett has been on the sick list lately. Several men of this community attended the Farm Bureau meeting In OnUrio Tuesday evening. Miss Donna Dimmick was a guest of Ruby Boersma over the week end. MRS. HOWARD LARSEN HEADS NURSING COMMITTEE Mrs. Howard Larsen has been appointed by J. L. Turnbull, presi dent of the Malheur County Public Health Association ,to head the nursing committee. This committee post was formerly held by Mrs. Ray Emmott, who has been forced to re sign due to moving to Enterprise, Oregon. W. C. T. U. TEA The W. C. T.
