POOR SPELLERS
Taken as a whole, our school sys
tem may be far more efficient than
it was a half-century ago, but in
one respect it is sadly lacking. The
present generation of spellers is
the poorest this nation has ever
known. Grandpa may have been
lacking in many of the things
which now go to make up a general
education, but the generation to
which he belonged could outspell
the present one both ways.
This is not said with any desire
to cast reflection on school methods
now employed in Gem county be
cause it is nation-wide in scope.
Th ratio of poor spellers among
those of high school age Is no high
er here than elsewhere, nor is it
any lower. Back in the old days, be
fore pupils had the wide variety of
studies now embraced in a common
school course, the three R’s claimed
the whole attention of the scholar.
He learned to read and write, and
he learned mathematics and, hav
ing but these three studies, he
learned them thoroughly. In those
days being a poor speller was look
ed upon as more or less of a dis
grace. Today it seems to be viewed
by the average high school boy or
girl as an accomplishment.
In recent years there has been a
tendency throughout the country to
revive the old-fashioned “spelling
bee.” Even the radio stations are
finding them a source of entertain
ment It is an idea worth encourag
ing, since it seems to be about the
only means of improving that fast-
declining accomplishment. The old
fashioned “spelling bee" helped
make the older generations good
spellers It ought to likewise prove
of value to the present generation,
the poorest spellers this country
possibly ever produced.—Emmett
Messenger.
PUBLIC BUSINESS
Payette Independent-Enterprise
The transaction of public busi
ness through state and county of
fices is a matter of public concern,
consequently a matter of news. Sel
dom is an officer found who is re
luctant to give full information
concerning the transactions of pub
lic affairs but occasionally such a
situation appears. Whenever such
circumstances arise the official is
most cautious that they not be
quoted as being desirous of keeping
from the public matters which are
of vital concern.
The expenditure of public funds
likewise is a matter of importance
from a news standpoint. Looking at
the matter from an Individual
standpoint, there are few citizens
who would turn thousands of dol
lars of their private funds over to
anyone to spend without a full
accounting of every cent.
The same prinicpal applies
to the expenditures of thous
ands of dollars of public funds.
There is another angle in this re
gard. Often times public officials
will consider most seriously the ex
penditures of public funds for cer
tain purposes when they realize
that the matter will be given full
publicity.
Full publicity to every official
transaction brings about much
more efficient management of state
and county affairs and is a mat
ter of utmost importance in real
democratic form of government.
