SUGGESTION MADE FOR NEW SETTLERS ASSOCIATION— HERE has been a little talk of the new set tlers on the project forming a club among themselves to work with the Nyssa Commercial Club on subjects of mutual interest. There is plenty of things a club of that nature could do. For example the matter of roads. There is ap proximately 200 miles of roads to be built on the new project; and this is a burden the county cannot shoulder. The county has done some work on the project roads, but to really build a year- round road on the project will require an ex penditure far in excess of county funds. Some other source must be found, and there are some who suggest that the CCC boys be put to build ing roads. There is a provision in the law which makes it impossible for CCC workers to build roads in competition with regular road contractors, but they do build roads in national forests and other federal property. Some feel that the new govern ment project is in the same catagory and that they should be allowed to work on roads on the new reclamation lands. A New Settlers Associa tion, working in conjunction with the Commer cial Clubs of the county, the Vale-Owyhee Land Settlement Association and others would carry more weight than any individual can. As time goes on, there will be many problems arise that can best be tackled by some sort of new settlers association. The Nyssa Commercial Club is anxious to cooperate in any way possible and this matter of an association among our new people should at least be thought out and brought up for action at an opportune time. ------------------- * ------------------- LEGAL ADVERTISING NOTICE TO VOTERS TO VOTE YOU MUST BE REGISTERED A s provided by Chapter 304. 1927 Lawa, no person shall be qualified to vote at a Primary, Oeneral or Special Election unless he shall be regis tered. T BASKETBALL TEAM MAKES GOOD RECORD— YSSA should be proud of the record made by the high school basketball team and their coach this year; in going to the district tourna ment and playing in the final game—some thing that a Nyssa high school team has never done before. To attain such a record is not an accident. The boys have spent hours of practice, hitting that floor every night since in December to the open ing of the tournament; practicing, perfecting plays and getting into condition for the hard grind. Coach John Young deserves a great deal of credit for the way he coached the boys and handled them during the season so that they were in peak condition at the opening of the tournament. N The Nyssa team not only showed up well dur ing the tournament, but made a splendid record during the season. They won 11 out of 16 games, defeating such big schools as Weiser, Emmett, Nampa, Ontario and Baker. fe r, he states, was a perfect bridge player but the daughter he picked will trump his ace nine times out of ten. Squirts FROM THE LINOTYPE By John E. Public You hear considerable complaint these days about the fact that one has to be on relief to get a job and the man who has sacrificed and struggled to keep off the relief sees men going to work simply because they have “been on relief." This business of helping the fellow who has had bad luck and had to apply for county or federal aid is all right but If the country ever get to a point where one has to accept government succor td get a job, heaven pity us We suspect that one of the reasons for the long list of relief clients Is the fact that they can get work where the other fellow can’t.
