PROOF OF BETTER TIMES »port issued this week by the O.S.C. agri A rei cultural extension service is cheering and their figures show that the depression seems to be gradually receding in Oregon. Higher average rices and better crop yields are expected to ring the farmers o f Oregon from 5 million to 10 million dollars more cash income than re ceived in 1934. Purchasing power of Oregon farmers will be greater than at any time during the past four years. I f we “ look at the record,” we can get an idea of how Oregon agriculture has fared during the depression. From 1926 until 1930 the average annual income is estimated at 124 millions. In 1931 this dropped to 74 million and in 1932, the depth of the depresson, it dropped still further to 58 million. Business conditions started to pick upin 1933, with the farm income for Oregon reachng 70 million. Last year this was increased to 80 million and this year sees another big in crease in farm income. Indeed it is cheering news, and means that we have now climbed back to within 70 to 75 per cent of the “ pre-depression” period. Not to be to optimistic however, we must take into con sideration that while the farm income has in creased, the increase in farm purchasng power has not enjoyed the same percentage of increase. This is due principally to the fact that farm taxes and interest in Oregon, in spite of some reduc tions are still approximately twice as much per acre as during the “ base perod” o f between 1910-1914. Economic experts regard the period from 1910 to 1914 as the “ base period” and rate it 100 per cent in farm purchasing power. If this period is 100 per cent, the period from 1926-1930 gave the farm purchasing power at 77 per cent; 1931 it dropped to 48 and reached the lowest point in 1932 when it dropped 39. In 1933 it advanced to 50 and in 1934 it further increased to 53. This year the purchasing power in ratio to the 1910- 1914 period is set at 5 per cent. In other words it is estimated that the “ new” cash income per acre in Oregon in 1935 will have 56 per cent of the 1910-1914 purchasing power. These figures supplied by the extension ser vice indicate that conditions are gradually im proving and that business should be better this fall than at any time since 1930.
