WATCH SOCIAL CREDIT (From Okanogan Independent) All bona-fide adult residents of Alberta are in line to receive from their government “divi dends” of about $24 a month, plus other bene fits which sound very attractive, as the result of the sweeping “Social Credit” victory there last week. If William Aberhart, sponsor in Alberta of the social credit movement, succeeds in getting the system into operation, it is going to be one of the most interesting governmental experiments in the world. He claims for social credit that it will strengthen the so-called capitalistic system by retaining all its good features and eliminating all its bad ones. In putting social credit into operation it is proposed first to make a survey to detemiine the total capital assets of the area in which it is ap plied. To this sum is added the capital value of its citizens, and it is considered that a citizen aged 25 is worth $50,000 to the community. The grand total is the capital of the State and against this security money would be issued and credit established without recourse to bankers. A sum is then paid each year to eveiy citizen of the state in cash or credit and termed a dividend. As the people buy more and more the aggre gate value or their purchases piles up, thus in creasing the State’s total capital assets. To spur production the State is to loan working capital to industry without interest. To spur production even more everything is to be sold at a “just price.” Under this proviso the buyer is to obtain goods well below cost of production but the sell er is to make his usual profit because the State will pay the difference in each transaction. And if that all sounds cookoo to you, remem ber that the intelligent, educated citizenry of Al berta voted for it overwhelmingly the other day. We hope that nothing at all hinders Mr. Aber hart and his followers from putting it to the test. If it works we shall want to know it so we can have “Social Credit” here, and if it doesn’t work, we’re P perfectly willing to let the people of Al- berta find it out for us. EDITORIAL COMMENTS BY CLARK WOOD Herb Hoover would most likely be the G.O. P. candidate if he coud be nominated by a Demo cratic convention. The two-or-three-drinks driver is usually con fident that nothing will happen to him, and nothing does—after he’s planted. Money lenders are often accused of having no thought above their interest, but it’s pretty tough when they can’t even collect the principal.
