BOUQUETS FOR CIVIC CLUB
The ladies of the Nyssa Civic Club are to be
commended for the annual flower show they
sponsor. By means of display of the choicest
blooms o f our gardens, it gives folks an oppor
tunity to see what Nyssa gardens and gardeners
can produce. Such shows also stimulate interest
and is an1 incentive for better gardens. There is
considerable work connected with holding such
a show, not only among committee members, but
for those who make the show possible by prepar
ing displays, and such efforts should receive
credit.
The ladies are already considering their next
show, and may we respectfully submit the idea
that it is none too early for growers to think
about selecting choice seed for their annuals and
t h e proper care for other flowers, leading
toward even better displays in coming years.
RESULTS COUNT
The Oregon Highway Commission has al
located $170,000 for construction purposes on
the I-O-N highway this year, which is welcome
news to the citizens of this section. O f this
amount, $120,000 is to be spent from the Owy
hee river east between Rome and Jordan Valley
and $50,000 is to be used to construct a bridge
over the Owyhee River.
While this is indeed gratifying to our citizens,
we should stop a moment and give due credit to
the persons responsible for these things. There
are several persons and oganizations who have
been working toward securing funds to be used
on the I-O-N and chief among these are our own
County Court, Judge David F. Graham, Ora E.
Clark and E. H. Brumbach. They have used
every way possible to help in the matter and
their efforts are bringing results.
Another important project which is to receive
favorable consideration is the Central Oregon
highway from Ontario to Bums. Bids will be
let soon for the construction of the last ungraded
portion in Malheur county. At a meeting held
last week in Burns Judge David Graham propos
ed a program which was adopted at the meet
ing. Under this program, all ungraded sections
o f the Central Oregon are to be completed as
soon as possible, to bo followed by oiling of the
highway from Harper to Bend; from Bums to
Lakeview; and between Burns and Pendleton.
When this road is completed it is estimated that
five hours driving time will be cut o ff between
Boise and Portland.
According to Robert D. Lytle, the 1917 road
program called for the building of the Central
Oregon, but instead the commission has been
making super-highways out of certain routes
and practically ignoring other routes. It is an en
couraging sign that the civic bodies of the cities
of eastern Oregon have decided to take action
on the matter and when the meeting is held in
Bums on Sept. 13, at which time tne Oregon
highway commission and Governor Martin will
be present, it is expected that a united front will
be presented, asking for the early completion of
a fast highway from Nyssa through the Cairo
junction and on to Bend to join the oiled high
way there.
While the Central Oregon highway is of vast
commercial importance, tne early completion of
the I-O-N is expected to make a vast difference
to this particular section. Farm produce travel
ing over this road can be shipped to California
markets at a greatly reduced cost, it is claimed,
leaving a larger net profit for producers here.

Taxpayers may some day get tired o f footing
the bill and begin kicking the taxeaters.
It's a mistake to suppose that the chief fun
ction o f government is to supply grease for itch
ing palms.
Britain is bidding now for the “ moral sup
port” of the United States. Reference to another
kind would be singularly embarassing.
