DON’T SELL NYSSA SHORT
One of the biggest assets a community can
have is a spirit of friendliness that attracts
people. No person or community can advance
far without a sympathetic understanding of
others problems. Making friends, whether it be
an individual or a community, is merely a matter
o f being friendly. A smile, a cheery greeting, a
spirit of live and let live means a great deal to
any community.
If you meet many people, invariably the dis
cussion will come around to the fact they like
this place or dislike that place, simply because of
the spirit of friendliness present. We here in
Nyssa should tiy and cultivate- that spirit.
Communities need other outstanding qualities
among is people if they are to succeed. We need
community leaders who know what is right and
the will power to see that right prevails. We
need that saving grace of being able to get to
gether on community problems, put our should
ers to the wheel and all push in the same dir
ection. We need an aggressive spirit that will not
be squelched; a spirit that will not be stopped by
adversity or unfavorable criticism.
We have in and about Nyssa natural advan
tages that should cause us to grow and thrive;
and we must take advantage of these things. Our
future depends on whether we can forget selfish-,
ness, greed and petty jealously and get behind
the movement for a bigger and better place in
which to live.
Right now, with the Owyhee project on one
side of us and the Black Canyon project to un
fold to the east o f us, is the time to put our house
in order for a brighter day. If we are to attract
the right kind o f people to our town, we must
develop that spirit of loyalty and unanimity of
purpose that will enable us to agree on what is
wanted and go after it with eveiy ounce of en
ergy.
We have in Nyssa several public spirited men
who have been continually working toward the
betterment of the town. Prospects are bright for
a sewer system; something we need in the very
worst wav. It is through their efforts that the
city will have an opportunity to vote, probably
later in the year, on whether this project is to go
through or not. Another thing we need in Nyssa
is a city park. Right now is none to early to start
thinking about the building of a city park; and
as soon as possible, start active work building
a park we can be proud to own.
We like the spirit of one prominent Nyssa
resident who said he believed that now was the
time to go in debt, if necessary for the things we
needed, for without them we were lost. If we
don’t start some of this action right away, other
neighboring communities who are pushing to the
front now, will be so far ahead we will have an
extremely hard time catching up.
