WELCOME CCC BOYS
Within a few weeks heavy army trucks will be
rumbling through the streets filled with enthus
iastic youngsters for Nyssa’s CCC camp. Most of
these boys will come from the section east of
Chicago and will probably be the first trip west
for most of the boys. No doubt there will be some
time before the boys will become accustomed to
western ways and we feel the people of Nyssa
should be willing to come at least half way in
helping the boys to become adjusted to their new
surroundings.
Out of a group of 230 young men, many fresh
from the city pavements of the east and drawn
from all levels of society, there is bound to be
some who will not fit into the picture. You find
the same thing true in every public school, in
every group, whether young or old. We should
be willing to remember that no one is perfect
and if some of the boys should run into minor
difficulties, lets not condemn the whole organ
ization.
Nyssa waits with open arms to receive these
boys and we want them to feel at home. In camps
over the country the three C boys have in the
main, proven that they know how to conduct
themselves like gentlemen and the camp should
be a distinct asset to the community.
BUILDING GETTING EASIER
The government is giving an opportunity to
all municipalities and other taxing units, need
ing new building operations, to make improve
ments at ths time by giving freely from the four
billion dollar public works fund. This plan will
no doubt make the realization of building pro
jects a reality to many cities, villages and school
districts throughout the nation.
Under the new regulations the government
will grant 45 per cent of the cost of an approved
building project and loan the balance of the
money necessary at 3 per cent interest.
Such regulations make it possible for great
improvements in a building way. In Nyssa for in
stance, for several years there has been agitation
for a sewer system. If we go after it in an ener
getic way, we can have a sewer system operating
in a few months. Another fine thing for Nyssa
would be an outdoor swimming pool where
young and old could enjoy themselves in health
ful recreation these hot summer days and even
ings.
Under the new regulations it should be a real
incentive for a building boom and a chance to
make Nyssa a better community.

out by the Oregon State Motor asso-
j elation,
which warned that the
change probably will catch many
automobile operators unaware.
The new right of way law was
passed at the last session of the
Oregon state legislature. The old
rule, it was contended was found
confusing to many motorists and
made traffic court squabbles diffi
cult to settle. After June 12 tlie law
will be similar to that contained In
the old “rules of the road.”
"Drivers when approaching high
way Intersections shall look out for
and give right of way to vehicles on
the right, simultaneously approach
ing a given point, whether such
¡vehicle first enter and reach the
Intersection or not,” the new law
reads. This provision does not apply
at an Intersection where and when
traffic Is controlled by traffic signals
or police officers.
A further Important feature, the
motor association explained, pro
vides that “any driver entering an
Intersection at an unlawful speed
shall forfeit any right of way which
he would otherwise have under this
sudivislon.” All other provisions reg
ulating the movement of vehicles at
Intersections remain the same.
One danger attendant to the
change has been called to the atten
tion of motorists. Some drivers may
believe that the rule entitles them
when on the right to take the right
of way at any time. Ignoring the
traffic on the left, according to the
motor association.
All motorists have been warned to
look both ways, and drive slowly,
when approaching intersection. The
association stressed the importance
of the speed law, declaring that it Is
easy to drive through an Inter
section at an Illegal speed and be
in the wrong even though on the
right.

Under an act passed by the recent
session of the legislature, It Is nec
essary to secure a permit before
claiming refund of tax for gasoline
consumed In Industrial or farming
operations, and, due to the fact that
this law becomes effective June 30th,
all claimants should act as soon as
possible.
More than thirty thousand claims
for gas tax refunds, amounting to
$1,053,042.75, were paid by the secre
tary of state In 1934. Many of these
claims Involve field investigation,
and an expansion of this work Is
probable under the new law.
