dizzy cliffs It makes thorough cuts through crags. One of
the new slopes, made of material tom from the heart of
the mountain, is a prism of red, cerise, purple, green and
blue and many shadings. When the mountains formed a
wall and said “Stop,” the builders tunneled. The tunnel is
itself four and a third miles long. Last Sunday afternoon
a representative of The Journal drove in an automobile
through this tunnel. It is that big! In the center the con
tractors of this intestine of nature found boiling water and
sand that under enormous pressure, smashed into bits
great timbers as they sought to proceed. Once it seemed
they were beaten, but they fought on, and they won.
Below the dam and reservoir, the canals, the laterals,
the tunnels and the siphons that are the biggest and most
daring yet built, are the valley lands. Where w£ter has
touched, the valley smiles. Soon a greater district will
throb in this area, where water is life.
