ONTARIO-NYSSA LEGION AWAITS STATE OFFICERS NYSSA, OREGON, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 24, 1932 LONG TRAPS HALF BREED COYOTE IN JAMIESON HILLS When Robert (Pud) Long, gov ernment hunter for Malheur coun ty, inspected his coyote traps above Jamieson last Saturday, he found a live, yelping mongrel in a trap which was neither coyote nor dog but an unusual mixture of the two. Colored like t h e coyote, t h e stranger had a natural bob tall and the short nose of the Shepherd dog. His legs were shorter than those of the coyote aud the rear two had the extra toes of the dog. He was undoubtedly a hybrid of coyote and Shepherd dog parentage, said Long. He brought the animal to Nyssa alive and a number of people in spected the badly frightened mon grel. He was later killed and Long stated that the unusual hide would be sent to the Portland office of the biological survey. D. Norcott, Ed. W il son and Robt. Long. They bagged the big birds on the Owyhee river above the Owyhee dam which is famous for its goose hunting in this locality. The geese averaged better than 12 pounds each. The hunters were jubilant when they returned with the unusually fine catch. It ls not uncommon for a party of hunters to bag from one to three geese but eleven caused a young sensation here. The party reported geese more plentiful than they have observed in years. SCOUTS RECEIVE BADGES IN COURT Increased Gas Tax Would Offset Proposed Cut In Auto License There is an insistent and irresistible maturities, interest, maintenance, oper demand that motor license fees for pri ation of bridges and ferries and admin istration, $7,270,000. This leaves a sur vate passenger cars in Oregon be reduc plus of $1,118,500. ed materially. W hat the legislature must consider, however when It reduces the license fees— as It will— ls that the cut must not be so low that the result ant revenue will destroy the highway system. Apparently a $5 fee. with an increase in the gasoline tax from 4 cents to 5 eents, will meet the demand for reduced licenses and at the same time provide sufficient funds for the road system to carry on— but it will not leave much of a surplus for major improvements or for extension. There would be an even greater surplus for betterments and for matching federal aid If the reduction of existing fees is slashed in half. A $5 fee is estimated to yield $1,041,- 900. This would be a decrease in present license revenues of $2.269,500. As an off set for this loss in revenue from fees, there is proposed one cent gas tax, esti mated to produce $1.400.000. The 1-cent gas tax would come within $869.500 of making up the loss from the reduced licenses. As, under existing statutes, the state receives only three-quarters of the license fees, the $5 fee would give the state »940,500 of the estimated $1,041,- 900. On the basis of the $5 fee, the esti mated state revenues would be: License fees. $940.500; motor trans portation fees, $300.00; gasoline tax, $7,- 100.000; traffic law fines, »18000; Inter est on bank balances. $33.000— a total of *8.388,500 From this total of revenues, deduct for fixed expenses, such as bond Surplus Seen After Cuts If a 50 per cent reduction in passen ger car fees ls made the surplus will be *1.901,000 instead of $1.118.500 under the $5 fee, or with a *3 license the sur Thursday.
