But the fact that a strong effort
is being msde to force the read
ing of the Bible in the public
schools, contrary to law, censti
tution, equity and the American
principle of no union of church
and state constrains us to give n
few reasons why the Bible-
should NOT be taught in out
public schools. Perhaps the first
in importance is that it violates
the constitution of the United
States. This fact has been de­
cided by the supreme courts of
numerous state», including Ohio,
Wisconsin, Nebaaska, Illinois
and California, and cannot be
successfully denied. In '“ hat is
known as the Illinois case Sir.
King, a Catholic, appealed tfc the
supreme oourtof the state. Here
four important points were de­
cided. The first one was:

On this point the court said:

appropriated surplus and flood wa­

worthy of being remembered:

whether or not said proposed irriga­
tion district shall be organized, there
shall be elected three directors, who
shall be residents of the State of
Oregon and bona fide owners of land
within the boundaries of said pro­
posed district, to serve as a Board
of Directors for said district, and
said directors shall be elected at
large therein.
That at said election the polls
shall be open at 8 o’clock A. M. and
shall remain open until 8 o ’clock P.
M. and that said election shall be
conducted as nearly as practicable in
accordance with the general elec­
tion laws of the state of Oregon.
This notice is given subject and
pursuant to an Order of the County
Court for Malheur County, State of
Oregon, entered at its regular sess­
ion on the 4th day of March, 1925,
wherein said Court, among
other
things, determined that the petition
of Oscar F. Selle and others, pray­
ing for the organization of said pro­
posed district contained the requis­
ite number of signers under the laws
of Oregon, and that said petition and
notice thereof were duly published
as by law required, and that said
lands are susceptible of irrigation
from the same source and by the
same system of works, by the stor­
age, diversion and distribution of
the waters of the Owyhee River and
Succor Creek, in Malheur County,
Oregon.
