on th e fo rtificatio n s fo r m ore th a n 60
y e a rs. W hen Gen. J a m e s O glethorpe,
th e fo u n d e r o f G eo rg ia, laid siege to
S t. A u g u stin e In 1740, M onteano, th e
S p a n ish co m m an d an t, h ad a la rg e
fo rc e o f co n v icts fro m M exico a t w ork
on th e fo rt anil by th is tim e It w a s so
s tr o n g th a t O g leth o rp e g av e u p th e
a tte m p t to c a p tu re th e tow n.
At th e close of th e F re n c h and In
d ia n w a r S pain, F ra n c e ’s ally, w as
fo rc e d to ced e F lo rid a to th e B ritish .
In 1748 It w as given back to S pain,
w ho held It u n til 1819, w hen th e U n it
e d S ta te s p u rc h a se d it fo r $5,000,000.

w h ich h ad floated o v er St. A u g u stin e
f o r m o re th a n tw o c e n tu rie s a n d a
