in
the
happy-go-lucky
manner
common to Oregonians no organ
ized oTfort Is being made to com liât
the pernicious bill
which will <be
placed on the November ballot to
limit interest rates to 5 per cent.
No more radical me sure was ever
on the ballot in Oregon. Its result
'would be ruin for the state from lm
paiement of credit anli dearth of
money to loan both from local cap
ital and outside capital.
"In effect this proposed bill pro
hibits charging a rwte of Interest in
excess of 5 per cent,” ¿aid a local
man who Is well posted In flnanolul
matters In Oregon. "Four per cent
would be thé legal rate. Just why
anyone with the mental capacity to
reason can support a law so abso
lutely pernicious in Its character Is
beyond our understanliing,” he con
tinued.
‘'However, the voters t
Oregon are called upon, from time
to time, to sit down on such mis
guided souls as the authors of this
proposed; bill and theso voters can
be depended upon to do so In this
instance..
In the event this hill should be
come a lajw it would have the effect
o f destroying the borrowing parwor
o f every individual, corporation and
"industry in this state, ’ he uDded.
"It is reasonable to suppose that
every loan now outstanding would be
called when it becomes due for it Is
utterly foolish to beliefs that any
one will loan money in Oregon at 5
per cent when 6, 7 or 8 per cent is
easily obtainable in every other
state in the Unían, with the result
o f a. general paralysis o f every line
of activity in this state."
'Let. every individual think It over.
If you are denied the privilege of
'borrowing money tor your needs, if
every one of your friends and neigh
bors are in the paste boot, if the in
dustries in Oregon are compelled to
close down for lack o f funds to
carry on their business, Oregon
would be compelled to set her clock
back 700 years.
