sideration Monday; Bitter
Washington. — The peace treat*
which has lain la • parliamentary pi
geonhole since November 19. While •
basis for its ratification was unsuc
cessfully sought In private negotia
tions, waa brought formally before the
senate again Monday.
Although prompt agreement is ex
pected generally on many of the minor
points at Issue, a long and bitter con
test is forecast over article 10 and per
haps a few other treaty provisions.
The leaders on both sides profess to
see some hope of ratification, but other
senators believe the deadlock certain
to continue until the controversy has
been fought out !■ the presidential
campaign.
Besides the outstanding Issues i f
the treaty fight the most prominent
subject of discussion among senators
was the letter of President Wilson
laid before the democratic conference
and made publle by Senator Hitchcock.
The president’s renewed declaration of
opposition te some of the language of
the republican reservations were Inter
preted in different ways.
Some declared the letter ail uncom
promising reiteration of the stand tak
en by the president on the eve of the
November ratification vote and assert
ed that Us publication had widened the
breach between the democratic and re
publican forces. Others, professing to
see new evidences of concession in the
president’s words, predicted an oppo
site effect.
Although the president’s latter was
written before publication of the state
ment of Viscount Grey regarding res
ervattons, in some quarters It was sug
gested that the letter W’ould not have
been permitted to become public if the
British statesman’s views had resulted
In any ehange in the president's posi
tion.

Washington.—Official dispatches re

ment furnished by the bolsheviki,
crossed into northern Korea from
Kirin, Manchuria, and attacked a Jap
anese post of 700 men at night, killed
300 of them and routed the remainder.
According to these dispatches the
attack was the initiation of an active
