To Head Up
Scout Program
Lute Jerstad. Portland-based
mountaineer-adventurer who’s
been to the top of the world and
back, will head the Scout “Top of
the World" Troop Open House
program in which new members
will be invited into Scouting this
fall
Jerstad. one of the five Am­
ericans to climb 29.028 foot Mt.
Everest and who took the first
motion pictures from the Sum­
mit. will speak and show films
during a kick-off session Sept 11
at Beaumont School in Portland
The meeting will launch 400
Troop Open Houses scheduled
throughout the 15-county Colum­
bia Pacific Council. BSA. be­
tween September 16 and October
19
New Scouts who register dur
ing the “Top of the World”
membership enrollment and
those currently registered will
sign an official scroll which will
be microfilmed and placed on
Mt Everest’s summit by a fu­
ture expedition. Each Scout who
recruits a new Scout will earn a
minature ice axe to hang from
his right pocket button, decals
and ribbons related to the theme
will also be awarded
The kickoff meeting will be
limited to Scoutmasters and
senior patrol leaders from each
troop in the Council. They’ll hear

movies dealing with that climb
and with the basics of moun­
taineering

for a day-long bus and boat trip
to Tillicum Village on Blake
Island on Tuesday, August 27
Traveling different routes, the
two groups met at noon at a
Tacoma dock where they board
ed the double decked charter
boat "Harbor Queen” for the two
hour cruise on Puget Sound to
Blake Island
There they were met at the
dock with steamed clams and
clam nectar as an appetizer for
the authentic Indian Liked sal­
mon which featured the sump­
tuous dinner at Tillicum Village
Indian dances were performed
following the meal
At 4 o'clock the two groups
boarded the boat for the cruise
back to Tacoma Coffee and
doughnuts were served shortly
before the boat docked Weather
was perfect and everything went
smoothly for a most enjoyable
trip Arrival at St Helens was at
9:30 p.m

makers study groups are invited
to training sessions on Monday
September 9 The meetings are
scheduled for the Extension con
ference room of the Columbia
County Courthouse
Study group chairman and
vice chairman will meet at It'

and treasurers begins at 1 p.m
Officers will meet and discuss
mutual concerns with members
of the Extension Homemakers
Advisory Committee, the Exten
sion home economist, and with
other group leaders discussion
items will include specific re­
sponsibilities of each office and
changes in the Extension pro­
gram this year.

The Columbia County Board of
Commissioners met in scheduled
session August 28 with Chairman
Fred Foshaug presiding. Com
missioners Minkoff and Ahlborn,
legal counsel John F Hunnicutt,
and secretary Gloria Salvey

Commissioner Minkoff moved
and Commissioner Ahlborn sec
onded the minutes of the meeting
of August 21 be approved Motion

Joe Schrieber met with the
hoard to present a petition for
blacktopping of the Wonderly
Road between the Heath Road
and Highway 30 This petition
was referred to Sam Hollinger.

Joyce Burghart met with the
board to discuss the fact that
necessary data from the Com
puter Knowledge Corporation
regarding delinquent taxes,
which was due the end of June,
has not yet been received, and
she is withholding payments for
the contract services because of
the delays. She requested the
Board contact Computer Know
ledge to attempt to expedite the
necessary information

Panorama Terrace subdivision

on it to determine whether the
project was being accomplished
in the proper manner
Hunnicutt was requested to
prepare u release of liability
form for signature by George
Divine, as a result of Hazel
Grove Road slide which dumped
dirt and rock on his property.

signed, designating Agricultural
Districts zoned A-1 Rural Areas
as per the rules of the Depart­
ment of Environmental Quality,
VI Disposal Areas. Section B, for
the purpose of application of said
rules in Columbia County. Mo­

Hunnicutt discussed with the
board a bulletin received from
LGPI regarding the Fair Labor
Standards Act, and the provis­
ions for payment of overtime.
Mr. Hunnicutt indicated he
would investigate the matter
further before offering an opin­
ion
Hunnicutt also discussed with
the board the pending vacation
of a portion of the Swager Road
Commissioner Foshaug advis­
ed lie had received a call from
Tom Nelson, Wolf and Company,
the county’s auditors, advising
the liens for the Viewcrest Street
Improvement project have been
improperly recorded, stating
they are listed as liens against
the property owners rather than
against the property itself, and
that the payments are not being
recorded properly Nelson for
warded a letter making rec­
ommendations for accounting
procedures to be adopted to fa
cilitate control of the payments.
