Commissioners
Sign Repair
Agreements
Agreements were signed with
the Oregon State Highway Com
mission by the Columbia County
Board of Commissioners last
week for replacement of the
roadway on the Scappoose-
Vernonia Highway and the paper
work sent off to the stale. Now it
only remains for the state and
federal authorities to sign the
agreements before bids can be
let for the road work which w ill
cost in excess of $400,000 for the
highway alone.
Included in the agreement was
the Fern H ill Road. Total cost of
the Columbia County projects
are estimated to be in the
neighborhood of three-quarter of
a m illion dollars or approx
imately $750,000.
Delay on repair of the roads
damaged by the January floods
have been caused by lack of
funding available from the fed
eral government whose alloca
tion was depleted until after the
new budget became effective
July 1 of this year.
With the necessary easements
obtained and funds now ap
parently available for the road
projects, it appears that work
w ill begin sometime in the near
future.

Plywood Co.
Shuts Down
The Linnton Plywood Com
pany w ill close for one week
beginning September 2, accord
ing to Plant Manager Lyle M c
Donald, the closure is affecting
the entire staff.
Following the week’s layoff
the entire staff w ill return to
work and at a later date a
determination w ill be made con
cerning future closures. M c
Donald indicated that work per
iod following the layoff is really
quite indefinite. It could last for
two weeks or longer.
According to McDonald, the
firm is looking for an upturn in
demand for their plywood prod
ucts. The company produces all
grades of four by eight fir p ly
wood which is used in a wide
number of ways such as fu r
niture, trailer stock, concrete
forms, cabinet making, etc.
McDonald stated that the log
exports have been like a cancer.
Small owners are dependent for
their raw m aterial upon state
and federal owned tim ber and
foreign market demand is d riv
ing the price up which in turn
puts his company in a cost price
squeeze One problem the gen
eral public is not award of,
according to McDonald, is the
fact that the log export com
panies bid and buy tim ber stands
for later shipment, sometimes
two to three years in the future.
