Ore To the Editor For over 40 years we have fed wild birds and this year so many birds fly into our feeding tables with legs shot off-some both legs-many with just one leg gone-some with one leg hanging and for a day or so they are too sick to eat. but just fly to tables and sit there Now just when they are feeding their little babies I also have a jelly dish on the window sill and they try to sit and find that they cannot get to jelly as they need more room when so badly crippled The last robin disappeared todav - she never cam e back The onlv one left of six or eight that come to feed here everyday and we have watched for her all day but some babies are motherless for sure Is it possible that birds are not protected by law 0 Mrs Ann Johnson Pittsburg. June 27, that a suit will be filed by the Port of St Helens against the State of Oregon to determine ownership ol accreted lands along the pen insula north of the Rainier Longview Bridge The Port contends that the newly accreted land is their land, and point to a U.S Su preme Court decision handed down in the case of Bonelli Cattle Company versus the State of Arizona In the Arizona case, the Su preme Court held that newly- created lands, resulting from navigational dredgings, belong to the riparian owner-that is the owner of the contiguous land upon which the dredgings have been deposited The property is question in cludes som e 200 acres, valued at about $2500 per acre, all lying north of other property owned bv the Port Originally,' under the ownership of Pacific Power and Light, it w as only a sm all strip of land that ran adjacent to the railroad tracks Some years ago the Port pur chased PP&L's rights to the property , and acquired an ad ditional 55 acres under the Rainier-Longview Bridge The Port then sold 35 acres located under the Rainier - Longview- Bridge The Port them sold 35 acres to Cascade Energy and more recently sold an additional 47 acres to that company for an expansion program "Our sole purpose in filing the suit is to determine once and for all who owns the ’fill lands in Oregon."
