Seniors Meet
The Vernonia Senior Citizens
Drop-In Center was the scene of
the county-wide Senior Citizen’s
Potluck at noon on Monday,
January 28 There were over
seventy people in attendance
with Senator William Holmst
röm and his legislative assistant.
George Drugas as the guest of
honor
When the meal was cleared
away, the Vernonia Senior's
president, V irgil Snook, intro
duced the Columbia County
Council of Senior's president.
Evelyn Mathisen of St Helens
Mrs Mathisen reminded the
seniors that they had invited
Senator Holmstron to be their
guest of honor so that they might
thank him in person for the work
he had done so faithfully for
them in 1973 Due to his efforts
they had received state funding
to aid with their transportation
in the five areas. Senator Holm
ström was then presented as the
speaker of the afternoon
The Senator stated that the
program for the Seniors has
been successful because many
people, including the seniors
themselves, their director, Dor
othy Churchill, the people in
Salem, and the local officials in
the cities and county, have
worked together to make the
final results possible. He also
reminded them that the funding
is for eighteen months, or the
duration of the present budget
period It w ill have to be
reviewed in 1975.
Senator Holmström graciously
answered questions from the
floor, mostly concerning gaso
line shortages which hamper the
busses in their attempt to get
people to their doctors.
At the end of his talk Mrs.
Mathisen presented Senator
Holmström and Mrs. Drugas
honorary membership cards to
the Columbia County Council of
Seniors, with special privileges
in Vernonia, and the invitation to
come and take rides on the
busses at any time to see how
they are meeting the needs. This
was accompanied by warm ap
plause from the audience.
Gratitude was expressed to the
Vernonia ladies for the delicious
meal and the warm hospitality.
Everyone felt they had a most
successful afternoon.
