Emergency
Hunt Slated
Oregon big game hunters
interested in participating in
emergency hunting seasons
which may be scheduled in 1974
may submit applications during
the first 15 days of January.
Simply submit a postcard giving
name, address, telephone num
ber. and the county applied for to
the Game Commission's P ort
land office P.0 Box 3503
Hunters may file for only one
county but it does not have to be
the county of residence Follow
ing the January 15 deadline,
county rosters w ill be establish
ed and hunters called from these
lists if an emergency hunt is
needed
Residents 18 years of age or
older may apply A hunting
license is not needed to file but
licenses are required if a hunt is
scheduled Emergency hunts are
held to control crop damage
which may occur at any time
during the year Since it is
impossible to predict when or if
such damage may occur, it is
necessary according to law. to
establish lists of eligible hunters
at the beginning of each year.
The chance to participate is
small with only a few emergency
seasons held since 1957, the first
year emergency hunts were
authorized If the hunt is sched
uled. applicants are generally-
called by telephone and must be
able to participate within a day
or two of the notice.
Other than a hunting license,
there is no cost to participate in
an emergency hunt However,
when a hunter takes an animal,
he must purchase a tag to keep
the animal Tags cost $5 for deer
and $10 for elk
Applications won’t be accept
ed before January 1 or after
January 15.

More children w ill be eligible
to buy school lunches at reduced
price under new fam ily size and
income level guidelines announ
cetl by the U.S Department of
Agriculture (USDA)
Previously, states could serve
reduced price lunches to stu
dents whose fam ily income level
was 50 percent higher than the
minimums established in the
federal guidelines As a result of
recent child nutrition legislation,
states were authorized to serve
reduced price meals to children
whose fam ily income is 75
percent higher than the federal
guidelines
With the minimum federal
guideline figure of $4,250 annual
income for a fam ily of four, the
additional 75 percent would per
mit schools to serve reduced
price lunches to children from
four member families that have
an income of up to $7.440 Under
the 50 percent provision, the
cutoff figure was $6.380
E lig ib ility requirements for
free meals were not changed
As of Oct 1. about 225,000 of
the 24.4 m illion children par
ticipating in the school lunch
program received their lunches
at reduced prices, and slightly
under 8 4 m illion received free
lunches Since schools have the
option of deciding whether they
use the higher figure, officials
were unable to estimate how-
many new children w ill start
getting reduced price lunches
USDA's Food and Nutrition
Service, which operates the
school lunch program, normally
requests comments and sug
gestions before placing new
regulations into effect But be
cause the law which authorized
this action was so specific,
comments and suggestions w ill
not be invited Instead the new
regulations went into effect im
mediately with their publication
on December 13 in the Federal
Register

Church Enjoys
Anniversary
Speaking December 23. from
the pulpit of the First Christian
Church was James Earl I^add
Jr. President of Puget Sound
Bible College In bringing forth
the message in honor of the
c h u r c h’s 50th Anniversary,
came the admonition to “ pour it
on” , (God’s love). Guests and
visitors were present to share in
the occasion One couple, the
Dudley Spoffords, came from
Willamina. Oregon
The service was followed bv a
wonderful potluck dinner, where
guests heard early church his
tory. from the founding of the
church up to the present time.
The tables were covered with old
and new photographs There was
a large yellow and orange iced
chocolate cake supporting the
numbers in gold “ F ifty ". One of
the elderly charter members
summed up the meeting quite
w ill She said. “ I t ’s a great life if
you don’t weaken” .
The celebration ended in a
most unique way By viewing the
birth of Christ looking through a
large homemade Christmas
card, watching children from
tiny tots up to fifteen participate
We look forward to many more
years of working together in the
Christian church only that we
might “ pour it on’ ’ to others we
