Millions of a ir miles are flown by Americans each year Their safe a rriv a l is controlled not only by the pilot and crew, but also by the unsung heroes who make sure the plane is flyable: the aviation mechanic. According to Aviation Mecha nics Journal, growth in the aviation industry indicates that 132,000 newly licensed mecha nics w ill be required between now and 1980 At present capaci ties, all of the aviation mechanic schools in the country can pro duce only 48,000. “ Even now in the Portland area alone.” says Armel Freed, instructor in the Aviation Main tenance Technology program at Portland Community College, “ there are more positions avail able than we can fill, particu larly in the helicopter field We have never had a graduate who wanted to be an a ircraft mecha nic fa il to find a job locally.” The requirements to become a licensed a ircraft mechanic are complex and demanding, as shown by the training offered at PCC Among the industrial skills are welding, sheet metal, wood working, painting, and fabric and dope work In addition, students must learn the intra- caciesof carburetion, magnetos, propellers, lubrication, electric ity, hydraulics, engine overhall, jet engines, systems, and instru ments. assembly and rigging, applied math, and basic physics. Then, there is a basic science class where students learn about m a n u a l s and publications, forms and records weight and balance, materials, and proces ses, fluid lines and fittings, cleaning and corrosion control, a ircraft drawings, and ground operation servicing. By the time a student gets through this course, he knows airplanes from propeller to rud der. He can perform any kind of repair necessary on any kind of airplane and can take an engine apart, clean it, check each part for damage, and put it back together again. It sounds like a lot and it is, but students of the 18-month course find it challenging and exciting One student, Bruce Carpenter, who is taking the course so that he can maintain his own a ir plane, said he appreciated the amount of practical experience PCC provides in the various skills. Wrecked a i r p l a n e s are brought in from everywhere and made livable again, no matter how badly damaged they are Often, parts must be fabricated because new ones are not avail able Students take enormous pride in the hand work, and it stimulates their interest in their classroom work, and it builds their confidence in their newly acquired knowledge. Prideaux, Oregon State Chairman for U.S Savings Bonds, says “ the higher rate applies not only to new issues, sold on or after December 1, 1973 but to older bonds as well, so there is no advantage in the redemption of outstanding bonds to buy new ones Furthermore, the m aturity on E Bonds, sold on or after December 1, has been shortended from 5 years and 10 months to 5 years. “ Over the' years, Savings Bonds have provided us with tim ely nest eggs — enabling us to take advantage of good op portunities not otherwise avail able. From a national debt standpoint, Secretary Schultz says they arc the cornerstone of our d e b t management pro gram ” Prideaux noted that those millions of Americans who buy Savings Bonds regularly, enjoy other direct benefits “ For ex am ple", he said, “ the interest paid on U.S Savings Bonds is not subject to state or local income and personal property taxes And federal income-tax lia b ility on E-Bond interest may be deferred until the bonds are redeemed or reach final ma tu rity Therefore, the new rate increase makes Savings Bonds more attractive than ever." THERE'S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD Cour»« The importance of "Thank You” notes from children for gifts are often overlooked in today's casual society However, they continue to be an important social custom for parents to teach children, reminds Carol A Ashley, Columbia County E x tension home economist. Children can learn that the time and effort expended by others in searching for a Christ mas gift can be rewarded by a simple note to the giver. Even the child who cannot w rite can tell mother and daddy what to say for him Or the child can draw a picture to express his thanks. The learning of simple court esies is important for a child. It helps him develop confidence in how to handle situations. If getting thank you’s is bur densome, why not set aside a “ no television” evening when all members of the fam ily can write notes, suggests Mrs Ashley. That couldbe an opportunity for a family-shared activity - better than making thank you’s a chore to be nagged about. Uernonla Eagie S' [id?. ?ü**i?<&íid?id
