Forest Fires Not Too Bad Something short of a miracle prevented more fire damage in National Forests in the Pacific Northwest this summer This is the assessment of the U.S. Forest Service. Regional Forester Theodore A. Schlapfer said, “ I t ’s apparent we’ve escaped all the dire pre dictions, thanks largely to a combination of efforts, p artic ularly on the pari of an informed and concerned public.” Schlapfer noted the summer of 1973 was the most potentially explosive fire season in decades, one that could have seen more acreage burned than was re corded in the 1970 fire season Despite statistics which show i>d about a 20-percent increase in the number of man-caused fires and more than six times the acreage destroyed over last year, Schlapfer said the loss to fire fell short of expectations Lightning-caused fires includ ed the worst blaze of the season, the 16,(MX) acre Freezeout fire in eastern Oregon In all this year, 26,442 acres have been destroyed by man and by lightning Schlapfer said, however, total acreage losl was only 2,800 acres nhove the five-vear average of 23,796 acres Film Slated Sunday Eve People, who enjoy watching the ‘ ‘Good Guys” and " Bad Guys” ride off in a cloud of dust across their television screens, w ill find a new twist to “ The Gospel According to Most Peop le” This dramatic motion pic ture feature w ill be shown at the Joy Theater on Sunday, Nov 18, at 6 p m.
