Hunt Locally
A fa irly rare mushroom, for
this area, was found recently be

Mushroom i Sparassis Radica-
ta ', identified with the coral
fam ily, was found in the Clat­
skanie area
The Cauliflower mushroom is
fleshy with flat leafy branches of
a lettuce-like appearance with
height from three-to 12-inches
and from four-to-24-inches in
width It is off w hite, huff or pale
yellow and huge rosette, round
and much folded
It is found in the wixxllands of
Oregon and Washington, mostly
in the Olympic and Rainier
National forests in Washington,
and grows from spring till fall
“ It is edible and quite delicious
It keeps well and dries nicely"

and knows quite a bit about
many types in this area
They started out about three
years ago when his wife, Gladys,
picked some meadow mush­
rooms and after a neighbor
okayed them to be eaten, she
cooked them After some appre
hension Sharar ate and liked
them His sister bought a book on
mushrooms and he's been using
it ever since
Sharar, 43. has lived in Ver­
nonia since 1954 Sharar and his
w. e have five children, two of
which are still at home He
works for Crown Zellerbach and
has the other men he works with
looking for mushrooms during
their lunch hour, too The hobby
is catching
Favorite of the fam ily, along
with the cauliflower and mea­
dow mushrooms, are the Cha-
nerelles. Corals. Oysters and
Puff Balls Quite a few are found
in their back yard, but like all
good mushroom hunters they
don’t tell where they get the big
ones

KIP BRADY, Bill Horn and son, Billy Horn Jr. at the military
base In Missouri where Kip and Billy recently graduated from
basic training. Kip Is the son of Dorothy Brady,

home the latter part of No­
vember for a 30-day leave prior
to their overseas duty.

M r and Mrs B ill Horn re­
cently flew to St. Louis, Mis­
souri, and then drove to Fort
Leonard Wood to attend the
graduation ceremony of the 5th
Battalion of the U.S. Army
Training Center as their son, Bill
and Kip Brady were in the class.
The weather was cooperative
and the impressive ceremonies
were held outside for the 2000
young troops.
Flags from all 50 states were
posted around the grandstand
which was filled with parents
and relatives from all over the
United States, They report this
was a real th rill to see the boy
march in such perfect unison
while being reviewed by Major

base for the weekend
Since neither B ill or Kip could
leave the base following the
graduation, the afternoon was
spent together touring the base
which comprises some 70,000
acres and bowling. They spent
the dinner hour with the boys
also.

held their first meeting since the
