BY John Knowlton
It was the last big tournament
of the year, the Nehalem Valley
Open The 52 contestants re
presented nine different areas
and most came with the hope of
putting together a couple good
rounds of golf and maybe going
home with some of the $175 in
prize money They came from
Portland and Beaverton and
Rainier and Lake Oswego and
still more areas.
And when the first foursome
teed off last Sunday morning
conditions were right The sun
shone brightly on the dew-co
vered fairways and greens. The
cool westerly breeze fanned the
golfers' faces and kept tem
peratures bearable.
Group a fte r group they
marched down the fairways
pulling their golf carts or sling
ing their golf bags over their
shoulders They addressed the
ball in their normal fashion and
brought the clubhead back With
their eyes on the ball, they
started their downswing, first
with the body, then the arms and
finally the club Down it came
swift and hard, then harder and
harder yet until it smashed the
white ball and sent it screaming
down the fairway closer to the
flagstick and, for some, closer to
the prize money which lured
them there to begin with.
And when the last putt of the
last foursome fell to the bottom
of the cup, it was over A
Beaverton golfer named Larry
Aalv ik had indeed put together a
couple of good rounds of golf.
Matching 34’s gave Larry, a
member of the Tektronix golf
team, a four under par 68 and $85
in prize money for winning both
the low net and low gross prizes.
Three strokes back, in a tie for
second and third place were
John Rohrback and Elmer
Schlottmann also of Beaverton.
Both John and Elm er were
awarded $37.50 gift certificates
for their play.
The two remaining prize win
ners also netted 71 but because of
their higher handicaps finished
fourth and fifth respectively.
Sam Spicher’s 13 handicap net
ted him a $10 gift certificate and
Jerry King's 17 handicap netted
him a $5 gift certificate.
At last week's Mens Night play
Lynn Michener was a double KP
winner when he got the KP on
number four and on the third
shot on number eight. A gift
certificate of $8.75 went to Bob
Bates and Ralph ''Bergenstein”
Bergerson for being the top point
getters in bingo-bango-bongo.
