Mrs Luther (Addie) Herrin of
Dallas passed away January 6 after
au extended illness. She was buried
January 10 at the Salt Creek ceme
tery.
The Herrins were residents of
Vernonia for many years. After
leaving here. Mrs. Herrin taught
school at Rickreall.
Several from Vernonia attended
the funeral, including her brother,
M.C. Brewer Sr.; nephew and wife,
Mr. and Mrs M.C. Brewer Jr., a
niece, Mrs. Max Buckner.
Friends attending were Mr. and
Mrs. Virgil Snook. Mr. and Mrs.

Marie Atkins. 72-year-old resi
dent of the Vernonia area for the
past half century died at her home
on Mist Route, Vernonia, January
17. following a brief serious illness.
Funeral services for Mrs Atkins
were held at the Fuiten Mortuary-
Chapel. Vernonia, Saturday, Janu
ary 20. at 1 p.m.
The Rev. Jack Carlson, pastor of
the Vernonia Evangelical Church,
conducted the service with Mrs.
Frank Serafin as soloist, and Mrs.
Lloyd Thomas, organist. Conclud
ing services and interment were at
the Vernonia Memorial Cemetery
with Tom Hall. B ill Horn. Sam
Hearing. Glen Hawkins. Harry Cul
bertson and Harry Emmons serv
ing as pallbearers.
Mrs Atkin was born at Am ity,
uregon on July 15. 1900. the daugh
ter of the late Augustus and Sarah
Baker Simmons, who were early
residents in that area She received
her education at Am ity and was
united in marriage to Earl L Atkins
at Vancouver. Washington on June
26. 1919 Since 1921) they had lived in
Columbia and Clatsop counties,
living in various
communities
where her husband worked in the
logging and lumbering industry.
They lived a number of years in the
Birkenfeld area before moving to
her present home near Vernonia.
Mrs. Atkins was very active in
community and fraternal work and
was a member of the Vernonia
Evangelical Church. 1Y'. Heart
Rebekah Lodge No. 243, Vernonia
Temple No. 61. Pythian Sisters, the
American Ix-gion Auxiliary and the
Veterans of World War I Auxiliary.
Her hobby was cooking and helping
other people, and a few years ago
she was named the first “ Woman of
the Year” by the Vernonia Cham
ber of Commerce.
Mr. Atkins preceded her in death
here in October, 1958
Surviving is a daughter, Mrs
June Kay. and a son, L.E. "B ud ’’
Atkins, both of Vernonia,; two
sisters. Mrs Mildred Andes of
Portland and Mrs Leta Cooley of
Port Orford, eight grandchildren
and 12 great-grandchildren

had made four trips to the Gold

A longtime resident of Vernonia.
Mr Kaspar was employed by Clark
& Wilson, and Oregon-American
lumber companies
He is survived by: His wife,
