new w inter oat released this fall for

The new oat was developed from a
cross of grey w inter oats and a num
bered selection made by the Oregon
State University experim ent station
in 1952 Following numerous head
selections and testing over a period
of tim e, the variety was judged
meritorious for increase an as oat

In yield trials conducted since
1967. the new Am ity oat has out-
yielded all com m ercial varieties,
and particularly Powys, the only
other white winter oat in com m er
cial production Not only has the new
oat shown superior yield ch aracter
istics but bushel weight exceeds that
of other winter vaneites with the
possible exception of powys when
compared with grey w inter. Crater.

Superintendent Dale Parnell has
reported, but he predicted the
number w ill increase in 1973 and hit
a new high in 1974.
