Loggers Fall Prey
To St. Paul Bucks
By
Melvin
Schwab
A very confident band of Ver
nonia loggers took to the road
Friday night for the second time
in as many weeks, journeying to
St. Paul to take on that squad
in league action and were soundly
bulldngged, hogtied and shipped
back to the tree country to learn
the basic fundamental of football
The Loggers going down to a
18-6 defeat looked anything but the
team that engaged and defeated
Knappa the week before. In all
justice to the local eleven, how
ever, they did meet one darn good
team in the St. Paul eleven, which
should probably go all the way in
this league
St. Pau! scored their first six
points midway through the first
quarter when they burst through
Vernonia’s left tackle spot from
their own 32 yard m arker for a
flB yard run Try for point failed.
In second quarter action the
Buckeroos struck once again, this
time on an interception on their
own 40 which went all the way.
Again, the try for point failed.
St. Paul's third TI) came in
third quarter action when they
skirted the Loggers’ left end for
a 73-yard run. Again, try for point
failed
In the last two minutes of the
game the Loggers, in desperation,
threw a long pass which was ga
thered in by Mickey Borst for the
TD. This action covered 45 yards.
Try for point failed.
In the first down department, the
Loggers matched the Buckaroos,
but couldn’t seem to keep a sus
tained drive going. Their defensive
weakness proved to be the margin
by which the Buckaroos turned the
tide in their favor.
The Loggers will play their first
game before the local crowd on
the local turf this Friday night
when they meet the Corbett ele
ven. Corbett, which has a perfect
record so far this season will be
out to make it three in a row, but
the Loggers should be able to
bounce back and play the type
ballgame of which they are cap
able, and provide pently of thrills
for the crowd.

CONSTRUCTION FINALLY seems to be well underway on the East
Vernonia Sewer District project. The general contractor, North
American Contractors, Inc., moved a "construction shack” Into
location near Lake Vernonia last week, and truckloads of pipe have
followed. First construction will be at the pumping station site and
on the river crossing, reports indicate.
